I'll be painting my water pump Rocket Red ,does this need a primer or can I just hit it with the colour? Thanks Paul.

I'd reckon a primer would be a good idea if you want it to stay on. The original overspray on the aluminium components on the V8s only lasted a few months before it disappeared. Although with paint technology advancing over the last 40 years, maybe the new stuff doesn't need it?

I wouldn't be too worried about priming if you're using a high temp engine paint, if not then a thin coat of etch primer would be a good idea. Of course make sure it starts off as clean as possible either way and wiped down with wax and grease remover.

In reality being aluminium, it use's a different etch primer, ideally I'd use sikkens 1k wash primer available in a spray can or similar wash primer ect. Bare minimum I'd use either wattyl super etch, or protec etch pro. But you should use a wash primer. Obviously get the surface very clean wax and grease remover as stated. Gary.

Was there ever a primer used originally or did they just hit the entire block pump and thermostat housing with Rocket Red?

VHT hi temp engine primer works a treat, you will find you will go through half as much of your colour choice and the look of the finish will be much sweeter.
