So Dad and I had been talking for the past few years about getting a project car. Dad had several toranas over the years, mostly ss hatchs and one srl. This Shell popped up and after comparing prices around we went and had a look, most of the buts where there so we negotiated a price and picked it up the following weekend. Originally it was a LH SL 6cyl with colum shift manual in burgandy.

On the way home

zkfwi9.jpg

The plans for the car is to restore the body to a good roadcar standard that wouldn't look out of place at a local car show, but it will be driven. Engine is a little undecided but we are thinking something based on a 308/304 with a carb, there is a temptation for a small blower. Undecided on a Auto or modern 5speed manual. Diff has been decided to be a BW78 with disks and a front brake upgrade. Interior will be retrimmed in grey/Black.

We are a bit undecided on the look of exterior, most likely will be using bolt ons. I like the boot wing but dad is not as keen. Colour is anyone's guess. There will be NO 'SLR5000' stencils on the car, everyone's first question is 'is it 'genuine' and replying no each time wouldnt seem right.

Need a Nick name for the car other then 'money pit'.

One of the first Jobs was to sort out the mounts for the rotisserie. Generally speaking these are mounted to the bumber mounts. Here are the rears done. I didn't take photos of the front but will be putting the car up on the rotisserie tomorrow so will update again.

It's probably not the best base to start from. Would have been nice to have a SLR or a SS, but with prices these days they where not going to be in budget if you can even find them.

First of the rust repairs with a rare spares battery tray. Only required a small trim and fitted pretty well. My father will be doing 99% of the body work.

Hey Aaron, There is nothing better than a family project. The car looks great. Maybe you can call her Torus ? I think a manual box really suits these cars :). Sounds like your dad is really cool. Stay old skool with as much as you can (up to you) I will be keeping an eye on this build. Ray

Torus (Toranas are Us), I would use it myself but my daughter has already called ours Torie the Torrie. Very common I know lol

I'm not so sure about naming it after one of the ugliest cars ever made haha. WOTAM maybe more appropriate (waste of time and money haha) but not exactly original.

Car has been stripped down and hoisted up in the air on the rotisserie.

A few months back picked up a full set of near immaculate LX seats from a local legend. If they where Black we wouldn't even worry about recovering them.

Ever used the VHT vinyl paint Aaron? Very effective.

Paint 'em black with the VHT, throw some nice dark-coloured sheepskins on there and you're done!

I wouldn't leave 'em bare vinyl though, even in Tassie you'll get sick of doing the two-cheek two-step every time you get in on a sunny day!

The better "more Aussie" version would be WOMBAT (waste of money, brains and time)

Not sure other then paint. We both like the SLR Black/grey golf ball fabric.

Hi Clay,

Yes I have used it before. I'm not a huge fan of it. Have it on the dash in my drift car and it does not seem at all hard wearing. For seats I think it would flake off and stick to your clothes pretty quickly. But we may reconsider it before confirming the covers.

Not sold on the vinyl paint. Not something we have to decide for a while yet. If we are lucky it maybe ready for paint next summer.

You might want to try and swap the seats with some that are really asking for a retrim, the good original vinyl could be useful for someone if you find the right buyer? Better than throwing the covers in the bin.

Nice project. Go for the manual option. Looks like a decent shell from what I can see? What damage/rust is present?

Looked for several months for some seats in decent condition locally. I'm not sure how many people would be after this colour specifically. Everything else I found had been out in the weather, poor condition or needed refoaming. Even the unpainted Steel in the frames and springs are have barely any rust. So not so keen on trading them for worn seats haha.

The Shell does have rust in places but nothing that can't be repaired. Have some more repair sections coming, should be here next week. Will still need a boot pan and a lower radiator tie panel. also have a lead on a lhf guard in surposed strait condition.

Brought a small blasting cabinet and a bucket if Glass bead. I'm impressed with the results for the money. The Glass is suitable for aluminium as it's not too harsh and does not pit.

Picked up a couple of resonable condition original rear bumpers locally.

Have been doing some work along the LHS. Most of it ready for a skim coat of filler. A few patch going in around the sill panel.
