wondering if anyone could give me a date ; approx ; of this engine 

QD29606 i know it's a 173 out of a hq

You can find out an exact date from looking at the one cast into the block down near the oil filter, presuming you actually have the engine.

I'd take a guess at July '71 but as above, you can get the exact date off the block.

 

The code will look something like F151 or G81 or something like that?

yes i know how to read the date but the bloke won't answer the emails 

so was hoping someone can date it from the engine number

No worries. I don't have many examples from that range so can't pin it down any further by the number alone, that would've been made right around the time of the HQ's release.
