There was only one factory for LH LX toranas , Dandenong,Maybe some exceptions for very early production. From what I've seen the tanks were that silver tin plated finish from factory. Although I know just about every one you see is painted black

P.S. I'd like to know how they plan on fitting a HX chassis into an LX Torana too!

They don't, the car behind the 4.2 litre hatch will be a HX Holden.

I agree with '2 girls racing'. At the end of the production line they often sprayed a "dull flat black" to various underbody areas to hide them.
EJ/EH Holdens are a good example. The fuel tank was also finished in a bright zinc plating, which stood out like the proverbial !
Because of the shape of the rear wheel arches, the tank "shine" stood out too much when viewed from the side.
Just before the road wheels were fitted, they sprayed the RH side of the tank in a flat black finish, which made it almost invisible.
I'm sure than Holden did this to all cars in the 70s for the same reason.

And just about every car yard I remember visiting looking for cars sprayed the underside of the cars black to hide all the chips, scratches, dents , leaks etc

As a matter of interest, Holden & Torana fuel tanks were not zinc plated. They were stamped from Terne Plate.
Terne Plate is sheet steel that has a coating (both sides) of tin and lead alloy. Usually around 10 - 15% tin and 85 - 90% lead.

Yes, you are correct. I was just using the term "bright zinc" as a generic term.
