Silly question, but is it simple enough to convert an M22 gearbox to an M21? Is it as simple as the input shaft and the gearing change?

Im assuming find those parts could be hard also

From memory the case, main shaft and 1st & 2nd gears are common between the M21 and M22, everything else is different.

So you would need a new input shaft, cluster, 3rd and reverse gears, and the V8 reverse idler.

Or if you just want to use the M22 as-is behind a V8 then I believe the M15 three speed input shaft is interchangeable with the M22, you just need to find a V8 three speed input shaft.

So you would basically need to cannibalize an M21 to get the parts you need anyway.

Was the M-22 mainly for One Tonners due to the low ratios for heavy loads.

regards

Yes, The Aussie M22 was only used in the Holden cab & chassis behind the 6cyl engines.

Just attaching to this thread, ( apologies to JLM for partial hijack)

I haven't had much luck with search function, but somewhere on this forum , in regard to torana sixes, it was suggested a standard M22 mated to a tall diff made a very usable combination. Anyone done it, or know what diff would be suggested.

Cheers Darryl

I think the 2.78:1 would be the diff ratio to use with the Aussie M22. Still zippy around town in 1st, 2nd & 3rd and lazy cruising in 4th on the highway. But be aware the wide ratio gap between 3rd & 4th might be a pain around town.

The M22 was used for commercial vehicles with the 173 engine. Reverse and fourth are same as the M20. I did the maths on this, I'll see if I can find it but as I remember it if you use a 25" tyre with a 2.78 diff first and second are similar to M20, third similar to third in an M21 and fourth somewhere around 0.80 overdrive.

Here are the ratios for the three boxes in graphic form (all using the same tyre size and diff ratio):
