Dr Terry is the closest so he wins the prize. The guy who did the conversion had owned it for 25 years. Every gauge works correctly. Even the tacho. He bought a brand new VT roller motor from Holden, and mated it to a non electronic Turbo 700. I love the auto for just cruising around the farm.  My young bloke cooked the other one I had here, and to buy another head and rebuild the bottom end of the HZJ I was looking at seven grand. I got another whole Cruiser for the same money.

Friend of mine had something similar.

Had a 350 Chev diesel in it when he got it.

He swapped that out for a 454 for a while.

Then he went back to a standard diesel.

Was looking at a 7.2 litre cummins turbo diesel last I talked to him.

Those 350 Chev diesels were absolute pus buckets. Over here the 6.5 Chev diesel is all the go now. But they are still inefficient, noisy bloody things.

The Toyota single turbo diesel v8. It’s only 150kw but I get a consistent 13l/100km in my work wagon weighing a tad over 3 tonne. They do fit the older body I’m told.

Yeah, I have one of those. Once you are out on the open road with a trailer, it struggles to do any better than 19ltrs/100 kays. They are also $26,000 to buy new from Toyota. I have heard that there is a mob over east who put the V8 Commodore six speed auto into them which I reckon would make it a way better vehicle.

Yes there are a lot of variables when it comes to fuel consumption, and this isn’t a Toyota forum, but I just can’t get over my aversion to petrol engines in land cruisers. To me it’s like putting a diesel in a Torana. I doubt the yankee oil burner consumption would be less but probably bit more fun under foot. No argument about the cost but I wonder what a second hand one would set you back.

I might have taken you up on that a month ago, but it has had water in the cylinders for way too long now.

I don't think one would fit anyway Clay. Toyota had to widen the front track to get them in at the factory.

It has been done here in Adelaide but yes I’d say just buy the newer truck and be done with it.
