As a volunteer at the GCCM, that opened nearly 3 years ago, it is sadly to close.

You may have already heard the news via usual media sources.

Had been a great set up and was very unique and am sure those who visited would agree.

All cars to be auctioned off on weekend of 6 and 7 April.

And to think in the first 2 years, we had around 100,000 visitors each year.

It's to do with a ATO dispute.

Cheers

No good.
I dont know the inside detail, so can only guess Dave..
a.
The business model needed to rort the tax system to be successful?
or
b.The ATO went on a vendetta and the result is that 2 really good car museums in our area both closed within months of each other.
I guess regardless, it's a bloody shame.
One assumes all the good museums world wide, operate within a certain model, that maximises tax breaks.?

Bloody shame.

Shame, I went early January and even without a Torana on display I thoroughly enjoyed.

What was the other museum?

Yeah, it's a damn shame. Gosford needs reasons to visit and this was a great reason, nice and close to the freeway and a good distance from Sydney and Newy for club runs...

Cheers,

Liz :)

It would seem that the business model was a bit dodgy.

But surely it would have been easily addressed by separating the entities somewhat better.

Seems someone was a bit lazy, or got the wrong advice from somewhere.

Being that most cars were available for sale, so Im led to believe from someone who visited it, made it a bit suss to pay to go into a showroom.

The tax man doesnt like getting ripped off.

Perhaps scrutiny was placed on them by a legitimate dealer of collectable cars?

As a volunteer, it was so great to be able to mingle with all these cars and of course talk to the public about their cars, their stories, their memories and so on.

And of course the XU-1 we had there in the early days (an export to NZ and now returned) always had the some of the biggest crowds around it along with the black XY GTHO.

It might be worthwhile to draw some parallels here re other business models:

- you often pay to go into an art gallery to see art works on sale

- you pay a membership to COSTCO then go in and have to pay for groceries

Maybe similar, maybe different?!

the usual reason for having a dispute witht the tax office is that you normally have tax/PAYG arrears, and under normal circumstances you need to be well behind before the ATO bring things to a head.

Of course the cars on show were the main drawcard, but quite often it would be the parking lot outside where various clubs would attend in vast numbers with their vehicles - that would be the alternate 'show'. And some rare cars would turn up too.
