This is from the Torana Garage group on facebook today. Nothing to do with me, here FYI

ATTENTION TORANA OWNERS IN QLD PLEASE READ Hi there, im trying to help out a fellow car enthusiast that owns a yellow torana number plate lxt78 from having his car impounded due to identification fraud of my torana im about to sell, iv done a online chassy check and it comes up that torana is registered with my cars identification, spoke with my cousin a reputable police detective, and he has his mate in qld ready to go to owner and impound car on the spot!! I feel for this guy.. my car has been in storage for 30 years tags disappeared close to 30 ago, my car was issued with a modified chassy number that has been clarified, the qld torana has used that number too linked to rego! I thought b4 im forced to start the process with police, out of respect speak to owner, he may have paid big $$ for car as eng number is a 4door a9x 308 block possibility of if rebirthed as a9x big money this guy could loose, im willing to sell him my rolling shell to save him loss of his pride n joy and possibly big big purchase $ he will be losing if i have to process the problem, my name is mark rabbito 0434380012, hope i can contact him b4 i have to give my cousin his rego and they go pay him a visit. Regards mark rabbito

Very interesting.

It all seems a bit weird yeah? Why did the original poster have his chassis number altered? If it was there, why the need to modify it?

Im not sure DTMR keep engine numbers on file? You cant access that information freely.

Must be one of the very last of the LX's before UC?

DMTR keep engine numbers on file. They were printing them on our rego labels for quite a while until they switched to chassis numbers.

So let me get this straight, this guy has a shell with no plates and a restamped chassis no. And someone else has the car this one is claiming to be? Sounds dodgy.

Its a bit hard to understand what he's even trying to say. But seems he's found this torana with his original chassis number , as Brad said even if he just lost the tags, why the need to change his chassis number? Could be as simple as a rego stuff up and LXT78 has had its chassis number  miss read at some stage in the rego process. but yep got to love facebook

If I've got this correct around 30 years ago his LX was stolen and recovered minus all the tags. Because his car was stolen and recovered minus the tags the Police issued a new chassis number and he has the paperwork from the police for this.

So it's the "police number" that's been duplicated??

How did a car in QLD get issued the same police number as one in a different state (assuming this rabbit character is in a different state, sounds like he is)? Each state has a different letter suffix to indicate where it was issued. And if not in different states then it's the police's problem for duplicating the number to begin with?

As always, there's obviously more to the story, if the car was stolen but recovered with the original chassis number intact then it shouldn't have needed altering, compliance plates aren't the legal identifier, the chassis number is. You don't need the compliance plate to re-register the car.

And the QLD rego shows the factory DLX chassis number on the confiscated car, so does that mean that DLX chassis number actually belongs to the stolen compliance plate?

And no matter how good of a "mate" this QLD copper is, there's no way he would confiscate a car based on the say-so of some other copper's cousin, there had to be some other evidence of foul play?

If this other car in QLD has the compliance plates attached and the matching DLX chassis number then I'd suggest this rabbit guy's car should be impounded as well until both can be examined?

And why am I even wasting time talking about this... bloody facebook (all the comments about VIN vs. Chassis numbers just reinforces that)!

And if DLX062243M was reported stolen 30 years ago, how was it able to be registered again anywhere in Australia?

DLX062243M has not been recorded as written off and has not been recorded as stolen.

Engine number is HT6688.

That engine number is a little bit low for an A9X. There must be a digit missing.

Not that I'm aware of.

AFAIK, NSW Police issued number will start with N and end with P. VIC Police issued number will start with V and end with P. QLD Police issued number will start with Q and end with P.

It will be an early 1974 SL/R 5000 engine number.
