Hi,

I am looking for some guidance on replacing the front brake pads on my LJ. I'm getting the car ready for a Safety Certificate (Roadworthy) and need to replace the front pads.

I removed the old pads which also had anti squeal shims installed. I have purchased a new set of RDA pads from my local shop which are slightly different the old ones I have removed. The new pads already have some sort of metal shim attached (see pictures below) to the backing of the pad. They appear to have a textured coating on the shim. The shim has tabs that are bend around the edges of the pad to keep it in place.

Has anyone used pads like this before? Do I need to use the anti squeal shim's that I removed from the old pads when installing the new ones, or leave them out? Ill contact the shop that I bought them from to ask, but thought id search and ask this forum too.

I tried installing one of the new pads with the shims and it was very tight, so much so that it was difficult to slide that pad into position and the rotor became very difficult to turn, even when I fully depressed the calliper piston to give as much room as possible..

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Regards,

Brent

You can use either but personally I'd rip those shims off and use the original shims.

Thanks S Pack.

If I was to do that, would you also recommend I use some anti squeal paste / goo between the pad, shin and between the shin and the piston? I have read conflicting views on this so curious what you think.

Worst case I suppose I could try without, then apply the compound if I get brake noise?

Thanks for your help.

In almost 40 years of Torana ownership I've never needed to use any anti squeal pastes on mine, the factory anti squeal shims seem to do what they are designed to do.

The only time I've ever had a noise issue was when I had a disc pad that had a hard spot. Eventually that wore away and all was good again, although it did leave a score mark on the rotor, which I had skimmed  with the next set of new pads.

If you need shims, does anyone remake a exact copy of the original gmh 1's ? Gary.
