Ill leave the SLR one on regardless but I was just curious as to what it left the Factory with?… any help appreciated , thanks chaps!

All LH/X caps were plain.

Yep, those "SLR" horn caps are pure fiction, and they stand-out like the dog's proverbials as being fake on cars that are supposed to be 'genuine' according to their owners.

I don't think the big Holdens ever had "GTS" in the horn caps from the factory either as far as I remember?

According to the parts catalogs it was the same part number (9931400) across all Torana SL/R & SS models, as well as Holden GTS, LE & Sandman.

Did you check HQ?  HQ SS and GTS both got their respective variant emblems in the Sports steering wheel horn cap?

The HQ SS had "SS" in the horn pad. I did own 2 of them in the 70s.

Yeah, I think Holden decided to rationalise the number of horn pads for sports steering wheels in 1974.

In HQ/LJ there were 4. GTS, SS, Sandman & GTR, but when LH & then HJ was released all cars with the sports steering wheel, had plain centre caps, HX & LX were the same.

HZ & UC had the new design cap, without the Allen key bolts & had a lion badge in the centre.

Unfortunately I don't have a HQ parts catalog.

Don't know if this helps but it is from the HQ parts catalogue.  Cheers Ron

That edition of the HQ parts catalogue was printed in 1973, too early to list the Sandman version.

My hatch is a genuine L32 SS. The original horn cap is plain. But I like the look of the SS cap and and I'm running with that. The original plain one is tucked away safely.

Yes the fake SS & SLR horn pads look pretty good. It's probably why so many think that they are genuine.

Before the aftermarket caps came on the market it would have been a matter of buying a genuine HQ SS horn cap and emblem to fit to your LX SS

As I stated in my previous post, I did own 2 HQ SS's in the 70s. The first one I wrote off and kept the horn pad as a memento. That horn pad is now in my hatch.

The SS logo in the original horn pad is white in colour but I think the after market ones are red ??

Yes the aftermarket SS ones are red & are diecast like the original GTS & GTR.

The factory HQ SS ones are flat black on silver anodised aluminium & look a bit 'cheap' by comparison.

I'm not sure how many HQ Sandmans were made in total, but for low volume production that was how they were made.

SS horn caps look terrible on a hatch in my opinion. It's the wrong design and does my head in, cheers Aaron.

As i've said....the SS horn pad is a memory of a past great car. I do have the original (blank) torana horn pad and this will be installed when / if I sell the hatch.
