Right so I have a lc gtr that never ran when I bought it. Usual story I pulled it apart for a restore and are now putting it back together. It appears the Lucas alt is stuffed plus I’m missing the Lucas external reg. Someone point me in the right direction....can you buy an external regulated Bosch Alternator so I can run the original loom with a period correct Bosch external reg? Or am I stuffed and have to buy a internal reg’d unit and butcher my new loom up to make it work. Is it true that all I have to do is unplug the reg and just plug in the brown wire into the alternator if I go with an new internal reg one?

True I think? In the mean time, run the motor and give the alt a wee tap with a hammer and see if it starts to charge. Might just need a set of brushes?

I took it down to my local auto electrical and bench tested it and got nothing at all.

Likely to only be brushes. Which Im pretty sure are still available.

Or perhaps diodes. Again still available.

They rarely burn out windings.

However if a previous attempt was made to repair it without basic gear, it may have torn the slip ring connecting wire off.

That can be repaired, but needs some perserverance with someone knowledgeable about what they are doing.

The entire unit can be tested with a multimeter, but a soldering iron is needed to do the job as well.
