Hi i have tried all ways to put oil in the rack. I have had the car almost over on its side when i pour the oil in it sits on the lip were the rubber boot goes on and comes back out how does it run up hill this is on the driver side i think last resort is to take the rack off.  is there anyone with ideas. Thanks Gary.

Hi Gary.  If you look at the thread "LX Steering Rack Oil" there is info in there.  Appears you have to hold it vertical and pour it in? Check it out and hope that helps. Cheers Ron

We've been rebuilding these racks for decades & we never use oil.

The problem with oil is that it drains to the bottom & lets the rack & pinion gears run dry.

We assemble racks with a liberal coating of high temp wheel bearing grease & it works well.

I've pulled racks down that we overhauled over 20+ years ago & the grease is still in situ & the gears are well lubricated.

Damn hard to keep oil in them with the replacement boots too. The original screw clamps are also hard to fit to aftermarket boots.

No need to take the rack off to put oil in , just remove the cover plate that retains/preloads the rack bush guide thingy on the housing where the pinion shaft

goes into the rack. There is from memory shims and a spring under the plate , then you will see a the guide bush thing, remove it with long nose pliers , put oil in and put it back together , don't lose any of the shims coz they set the clearance for rack guide......

Change the rack end bush while you are there.
