Does anyone have a list of the correct part numbers for the Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors fitted to L31 Torana's. I'm trying to find the correct part number Quadrajet that should be fitted to my 2/77 L31 SS, and thought it would be good to develop a list of all the part numbers fitted to L31 LH and LX's......

The Rochester numbering system is enormously complicated and there were several different nomenclatures in use at any given time. There were several different manufacturing plant codes which form part of the number, which also includes a date code that gives the actual day the carburetor was manufactured and I *think* they were all imported so I have no idea what kind of lead-time you'd have to allow for (none of my Toranas have their original carb, both my VH Commodores should be the original Rochesters but I've never taken notice of the numbers).

It's kinda like the original engine, once it's gone, it's gone.

I do know there were several model changes for the Rochesters fitted to Holdens, mostly corresponding to ADR changes. HQ's had a different version to LH Toranas after ADR27(ish), and then they changed again for ADR27A, and then they changed again later on in the Commodores.

I'd say your best bet is to gather part numbers from original cars around the same vintage as yours and see if you can figure out how long it was between manufacture and the vehicles build date? Even once you know that, it will be an almost impossible search unless you know somewhere that has hundreds of carbs for sale that you can pick 'n choose?

It should also have a plant code like "CXK" or CXL"? Although I don't have any notes on which plants were what codes anyway.

That is supposed to be a 704 model, then the "5" is MY75, the "2" denotes a 4 barrel designed for Federal Emissions Standards (in the USA at least, but assuming that was good enough for ADR27 over here), the "8" isn't listed in the American options but Holden carbs seem to be either 8 or 9 for the division code, and the odd number at the end designates a carb designed for manual trans.

Looking at the Holden parts catalog, it says there was a different part number between 5.0L manual and auto cars pre-ADR27 (part # 17050641 and 17050642 respectively), but only one common part number for all 5.0L Toranas with ADR27 (part # 17052795). Then the part number changed again for ADR27A (to part # 17055956) for both manual and auto.

That date code I don't know what to make of... "2764" was manufactured on Thursday 3rd of October 1974, which is only just within the MY75, but if your car has a production date of 15th October 1975 that means it was over a year between the carb being manufactured until it was fitted? That seems like a long time, even accounting for overseas shipping.

The carb is not original to my motor. I bought it during the restoration.

Thanks for your input guys. A bit more research and I found this on the internet about Holden Quadies....

Rochester QuadraJet Identification

Rochester I.D.
All Rochester
products identified
by a “70” or “170.”
70 used pre-1976.
170 used 1976 up.
Year Code:

56 1976
57 1977
58 1978
59 1979
80 1980
81 1981

Emissions :
2 49-State
5 California
& High Altitude

Division :
0 Chev
1 Chev
2 Chev
3 Cad
4 Buick
5 Olds
6 Pontiac
7 Pontiac
* 9 - Holden

Transmission :

Odd Manual

So from this I think I'm looking for a number 1705629x or 1705729x with an odd number on the end for manual. Date code will be xxx6 or xxx7 (Where the first three numbers are the day of the year and the last number is '76 or '77.

See the bit below about 5L ADR27A cars which your 2/77 is. Same number for auto and manual  17055956
