I'm about to replace my exhaust system with one of Brad Merricks pre-fabricated made ones which run from engine pipes through to where it attaches to rear muffler. My muffler came with the car and was bought from Holden in the late 80's so its still in excellent condition. I have looked at the illustrations in the Fiv Antoniou book of how the rear muffler is attached and appears I might have an extra exhaust clamp at the rear of the muffler (closest to diff) and for some reason I'm feeling the tailpipe attachment (to the chrome pipe) is too close to the muffler i.e has my muffler been fitted so that it is too far to the rear of the car causing the rear hanger clamp (on one of the chrome tailpipes) to be too close to the muffler? photos of of authentic set ups would be nice.

Hi Mark
Correct - only one clamp on the front and the parts catalogue has the rear one way too far down the tailpipe.

Hahaha. Certainly has Bazza, didn't see that until you pointed it out.
Mark is also missing the hanger bracket by the looks
Ha ha - I missed the triangular hanger bracket. Kind of strange really because Brad Merrick used mine for the specs on his aftermarket offering.

Ok that diagram is super clear compared to the book so it makes it nice and clear to see what I need to do. Tony which one is the hanger bracket using the numbering system on the diagram? So the general consensus is that my muffler will need to be re-positions closer to the diff. Crikey it needs to go a fair bit back if you compare mine to the diagram. Be at least 6inches? Wonder what the measurement is between the chrome outlet edge and the start of the hanger?

The clamp that clamps the pipe into the muffler also attaches to the hanger bracket. Not 2 separate clamps like you have.

Yep. Further forward, toward the front of the car. Number 12

Mark - you seem to be missing this bracket. Bazza

I've got a merrick system to fit as well
Any recommendations for a fitter in NW Sydney?

Hi Paul,
You should be able to fit the system yourself. Pretty straight forward.
I test fitted all Brads repro LJ exhaust parts, both header and extractor systems (including mixing/swapping with NOS parts) on my car before and after they went into production, so I know they all have the correct fit and clearance.
My NOS engine pipe (Headers) was used to make the jig - we did modify from the original by lifting the repro pipe 1/2" so it doesn't rest/bang on the front stabiliser bar like the originals used to. Likewise my NOS extractor collector pipe was also used for the new jig, as was my original intermediate pipe. I also have a NOS rear extractor pipe and all pieces, both original & repro were assembled together in all possible combinations, and all interchanged without problems.
I have his extractor system fitted to my car at the moment.
Cheers,

I've just pulled my rear muffler hanger off to clean it up etc, and its bolted up like the Fiv Antoniou diagram (attached), however I initially thought the diagram above was how it is supposed to be fitted but appears not and the link to Brad's web wage showing an XU1 muffler with one of Brads fabricated hangers affixed to one of the chrome pipes is not attached like mine as my round hanger that attaches to the chrome pipe is opposite to Brads picture. Not sure if Brads picture is how its supposed to be fixed? See photo of my hanger. Can someone confirm this is how they are supposed to be affixed?
