Three part story...

1. Bought a horn ring for Torana off eBay a while ago and put it away for a rainy day.

Horn%20Ring%201.jpg

2. Went to fit horn ring but it won't fit over the retaining washer that came with the Rare Spares H1354 kit.

Horn%20Ring%202.jpg

3. Go looking for old parts I took off when I rebuilt the column a long while ago, most of the old parts still there except the part I need. This is the part I can't believe. :banghead:

Horn%20Ring%203.jpg

So have I bought a horn ring that's actually for another model Holden and they just said is was Torana and therefore that explains the no fit situation or is this just another case of aftermarket parts not fitting? :<_<:

Does anyone have a steering column laying around so they can measure the OD of the Holden retainer?

Many thanks for any help.

There are 2 washers. A 28.3 and a 25.4mm. That must be the bottom washer if the ring doesnt fit.

I thought that might be a possibility so the first thing I did was visit the Rares site to look at the image for the kit and this is what I saw.

h1354.jpeg

This only shows one washer so I assumed that there wasn't a bottom washer.  Thinking back to how the shaft was designed I didn't think it needed a bottom washer but I guess I must be wrong.  It was at least two years ago I pulled the column apart so I could be easily mistaken.

I shall pull the whole show out of the car and rip it apart tomorrow to have a look.

Doesn’t that horn ring go onto the steering wheel first?

Yep but I wanted to check how it would interact with the indicator cancelling springs and as I slid the ring over the shaft B) it was stopped by the retaining washer

Not as slow as me if I find a smaller washer at the bottom of the steering column

Hi Greg.  I have recently reconditioned my steering column and found that there were originally 2 washers, as Toranamat69 has said and they are different sizes, but only one in the Rares kit.  I'm no expert but I suspect the bottom washer (between the bottom of the spring and the top bearing) is to protect the bearing from the underside of the spring.  Cheers Ron

There are two flat washers. Toranamat69 has quoted their outer diameters. The larger OD washer goes between the bearing and the spring and the smaller OD washer between the spring and the circlip.

The Rare spares kit appears to only contain the larger flat washer.

The round profile ring, to the far right in the Rares picture, goes onto the steering shaft underneath the bearing. You appear to have it installed between the bearing and the spring.

Obviously your steering shaft still has the original ring installed and I would leave it alone.

Na, that ring in the far right of the Rates pic is in the correct position below the upper bearing.

I replaced the factory one with the Rares one.

Looks like I'm Gunna have to source another washer to replace the factory one I've misplaced

No problemo. Just sort of looked like you might have put it between the spring and the bearing.

Just to be clear, the Rares Spares parts went in this order

It's quite possible the column originally didn't have any washers in the top section as just about everything someone has touched on this car has been f_cked up.

I swear, if it wasn't factory original, as in someone else has had their hands on it in this car, it's been stuffed up.  I can't believe the lack of love and thought that this car has been subject to in the past.

You don't know how thick that 25.4mm washer was by any chance?  I might have to get one made up somewhere and it'd be nice to get as close to factory if possible.

So went digging through old photos and found one of the steering column before I got my grubby hands on it.

It had the proper sized Holden 25.4mm washer up the top just below the circlip but no larger washer between the spring and bearing which must be what led me to believe only one washer should be in that portion of the shaft.

So now to disassemble the column to see if I've installed the Holden washer somewhere else in it.

Made a washer and put everything back together.

So now I've got another question.

Does anyone know how you're supposed to clock the horn ring?

I think you will find the horn contact fitting can only fit one way on the steering wheel for the screw and spade connector holes to all line up.

It can be in one position or 180 degrees rotated, and then the boss kit C be rotated in all sorts of ways. I was wondering how the positioning of the lumps on the horn ring affected when the indicators were cancelled as the wheel rotated back but having looked and thought about it I don't think it matters but I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time (and that's just on this part of the car :))

I think that in the straight ahead (steering centred) position, the two lumps on the horn ring are supposed to straddle the loop on the blinker switch assembly?

But it's been many years since I had one apart, my memory might be failing. If you have a factory steering wheel it should be easy to tell?

OK, so you are using an aftermarket steering wheel and not a genuine or reproduction GTR/GTS/SS/SLR sports wheel?

Yeh, Momo boss kit with Momo wheel. Cheaper than the repro wheel.
