Radio lights dim

Hi all.

I installed an original style radio into my lh today and all is good except the green backlight is so dim that it can hardly be seen even in the dark.
Also the red light(on) is also not very bright and is almost purple.

Is this just due to the age of the unit or could i have done something wrong?

Blue/red wire to ignition
Long grey wire to earth
2 short grey wires to speakers

testing the memory but i always thought the original ones were earthed via the case/aerial and the long grey wire to dash light circuit. Both the yellow(blue/red) and grey connections made at fuse box terminals.

Accessory power. not ignition. Though symptoms you are describing sounds like the radio itself isn't earthed.

Also if it's an air chief 11 or 13 transistor, make sure you have a 15ohm speaker connected when applying power as without it connected there is a chance of destroying radio internals

Great, thanks for the reply and good info.

Its a Phillips LP40 which needs a 2 ohm speaker. I dont have the speaker connected yet because i dont have one of the required spec.

Ill re-wire as you described and see what happens.

LP40 is a 4ohm speaker if i recall. No need to have connected to test lights. If testing radio out of the car, put negative to case and run the blue/red to (fused) power and see how the red light goes when turning on. Then do same for grey wire.

If the radio is fitted in car, make sure case gets grounded.. usually the mounting tab at rear will do it it. Relying on the nuts at front and rusted/painted bits might get troublesome.

I'm assuming it's dash mounted?
