LS conversion into VK power steering automatically goes to full lock to the right hand side

I'm doing an LS conversion in a VK I have fitted avl power steering rack running off the l 98 power steering pump I've turned the car over for the first time and automatically the car goes to full right hand lock what would be my possible problems is there a possibility that I have the lines incorrect and by that I mean the pressure line to the return line which one is the pressure line is the pressure line the small one at the top on the VL power steering rack anyway any help would be appreciated guys

i hope youv'e got approvel because i have had to remove a 6lt from a vk and put a ls1 in because of the 180kw per ton
back to the Q the 5/8 nut is the high pressure line

My Ellery's Commodore workshop manual only covers up to VK. It shows the uppermost connection to the rack is the fluid return line to the pump and the lower connection is the pressure line from the pump.

Hey bat is the 5/8 nut the top one just so I don't have to go out to the shed and double-check it straight away only because I've changed all the fittings

I appreciate your reply here the VL rack I think was the first one to start running two ports the VK from memory runs 4
I'm wondering whether it's got an airlock or the pressure from the pump is too high and I need some sort of restricting valve I'm hoping there's a power steering guru out there that can help me..
I do appreciate any replies they guys anything can help
This is a VL power rackand sadly I don't have the lines here to trace back which one is which but I was pretty confident that the top one closest to wear the intermediate shaft meets was the powerline

thank you for your reply if it is the top one I've got it connected to the right area now hopefully someone can tell me for what reason it wants to turn the wheels to full lock right hand down

if you've had new line made was a restrictor tube fitted in
if not it needs one don't use plastic because they melt
if you have an old pressure line cut the hose you will see it

It will be a problem with the valve in the steering rack, doesn't matter how you supply pressure to the rack it shouldn't do anything by itself. Common problem in some of the older Falcons if I recall correctly.

so this restrictor that is talked about is not required or is required to go into the lines?
Or if the rack has a faulty valve this could be the issue?
Has anybody else come across this issue with the rack going full right hand down..
I have another rack here that I can put in but I would prefer if I didn't have to as you could imagine it is a rather large job because I've got to remove the extractors the exhaust the intermediate shaft drop the tie rodsand undo the fittings in the extremely tight position...

Surely a faulty rack wouldn't/couldn't be designed/allowed to default to right or left full lock. That would be certain death at speed.
There must be something else going on and not a faulty rack.

They generally only do this slowly and you can still override with the steering wheel. Like any leaking valve it will only leak a small amount so you can still open it further or open in opposite direction to get different actions. Its the only way that assistance can be provided without input shaft movement.

Ok, I was picturing the rack slamming to full RH lock the moment it was pressurised by the pump.

This is the restrictor at rack end
What I am led to believe by the bloke that does my high pressure hoses without it it will want to turn and act as if you have huge amount of bump steer

The restrictor is to reduce noise, nothing more. It's more of a 'tuning' device.
If you leave it out, you will notice noisier operation, but it won't effect the power assistance.

^ Yes exactly, we have had to make p/s lines at work for various cars (usually older or rare cars that oe hoses are nla) and if the restrictor is left out it just increases pump noise. If it is too loud there are a variety of inline adjustable hydraulic restrictor fittings on the market.

The steering rack PINION is in two parts with a torsion spring between them.
The torsion spring allows a tiny bit of movement of the steering wheel before power assist is activated.
This is so when driving in a straight line at speed you are not always correcting the steering wheel.
If that torsion spring breaks, the rack will have a mind of it's own sorta? The valve can be a tad open without touching the steering wheel.
