If I was home at the moment, I would dig out Norm's book, however, How many different 4 cylinder motors came out in Toranas? I thought it was the Opel first, followed by the Starfire, which I believed to be a 202 with 2 cylinders missing.  I also remember something about it being used in Toyota Coronas.  What is the motor in this 77 LX Sunbird? Apart from the brake master cylinder, is everything else factory?

The only cars sold by Toyota in Australia with the 22R (2.4 litre) 4-cyl engine were the:-

RA65 Celica (84-85)

RT142 Corona (83-87)

RN80-90-105-106-110 Hilux (88-97)

RN130 Hilux-4Runner (89-90)

RJ70 Landcruiser-Bunderra (85-91)

RB11-13-20 Coaster Bus (77-85)

All of these however were full imports & not built or assembled here.

The Starfire 1.9 litre was a 4-cyl cut-down version of a 2850 (173) not a 202.

The car pictured is an LX Sunbird which was only built with an Opel 1900, the Starfire first appeared in Sept 1978, partway thru the UC series.

My guess is that somebody has deduced that the 2.4 litre engine would be an easy swap into the LX body. He figured if Toyota can fit a Starfire engine to a Corona, I'll go the other way.

He has made a nice job of it, using the factory air cleaner & intake, PCV breather & carbon canister. He probably used the Toyota 5-speed gearbox which it came with, or even a late 4-speed auto with lock-up converter.

Carried out properly it would be a good way to modernise & re-power a Sunbird, without going the 6-cyl route.

Good conversion that one. Really tidy car too, nice with the tartan trim.

It is a very good conversion and a great looking car which is currently for sale on ebay @ 30k. No doubt the Toyota 22R 2.4 Litre engine and 5 speed gearbox are far superior to the original engine/box. I wonder if the car would be an easier sell if fitted with the factory engine/box ?

Has anybody on here driven a Hilux with a 22R even a 2wd single cab alloy tray job has no go they are that slow. I actually think that a modern fast turbo 4 in this car would be brilliant good Handling and easily 200Kgs lighter than any evo, 200sx ECT, cheers Aaron.

Are these 4 cylinder Torana Sunbirds the same as the 6 cylinder shells?  Any difference besides engines?

Think I'd rather put a 2L 2.4 diesel in than a 22R.

An 18RG would be the go
