hey lads, getting very close to slapping some paint on the hatch,

looking for black out painting mask out areas where too and best method of painting...been looking through cant find a directive post. there is a heap in build threads but nothing specific outlining process (that i have found having a man look).. if there is one please point me in the direction and if not would one of you gurus please create a thread dedicated on method and how and where, i am lead to believe that there re 3 diff variations and all mixes in between..

if there is not a sticky on this it may be a good one

the content

decal placement

masking layout

what to paint first

what to paint separately and what not to

best tape to use

when to remove tape in the process

method to assembling parts with minimal damage

stuff like that and i am sure there is so much more

yes i am aware there are more that one way to skin a cat but thats why a guru should be the author

thanks guys

Defently not an easy answer, lots of painted cars over time, very hard to give an exact answer. There is a few threads on here already asking about paint blackouts etc.

There are too many variables for a one-size-fits-all answer...

For example, whether the polished window trims have been deleted, and if the bonnet is black or body colour.

With a black bonnet and no window trim (in my opinion) the sedan masking along the style line on the guard looks better, but if a black bonnet with the window trim then the hatch masking of just the top surfaces seems better suited.

With a body colour bonnet and window trims then mask under the trim pieces, but with a body colour bonnet and no trim then maybe the old SL/R stripe along the guard scheme would be neater, although that does look a tad odd on a hatch.

Once you've decided on a scheme above, then you start looking at the 'inside the gaps' masking.

For the engine bay I prefer to paint the full lip of the guards and nosecone black, and the radiator support body colour, but that's not how the factory did it, so I guess it depends on how fussy you want to be concours-wise too? If you're going for the factory A9X look then I suggest looking for photos of "unmolested" A9X's on the sale websites (and I bet there'll be a dozen different variations of the factory masking anyway).

And the masking in the door openings will vary with the different schemes too, although a lot easier with a hatch as you've only got half the work to do.

I seem to recall Al doing a bit of research with Rusty's blackout masking in his build thread here:

But that's for a sedan of course. I'm sure there would be many other posts around here on the subject, it's just a question of finding them!

At Toranafest a few years ago, when they had combined A9X Nationals, I took about a zillion pics of unmolested original cars as they had so many variations of how they painted under the bonnet, black across guards to nose cone, inside doors etc. What we came to a conclusion, was lazy painters on the day took short cuts, and did there own thing.

I do remember seeing awhile ago a factory info sheet stating how the correct way to paint them with instructions, maybe google it?

Use these as a basic guide. I don't have
Views A, B, and C.
Omit the sill and rear as noted.
Best way is to copy a car you like the look of.

Not to be offensive to anyone, but just follow what red says, he's 1 of the a9x guru's.
