Ol' mate has a replica XU1 tank and rares sender and the needle at the gauge is all over the joint like a mad woman's breakfast.

 

Is this normal given this was a factory mod perhaps not engineered to perfection?

 

I've heard of later cars having a voltage stabilizer in the dash to minimize fluctuations?

 

 Do LC/J have one?

 

Is it possible to fit one?

Not sure Rob. I have the rares tank & sender in my Feb 73 car & it works fine

Rob, LC/LJ magnetic type gauges do not have nor need a voltage stabilizer.

Take the tank unit out and test it with an analogue multi meter, slowly moving the arm up and down and see if the meter needle reacts the same way as the gauge.

May be a defective sender unit or just a bad earth or electrical connection or the fuel gauge is faulty?

Getting a new reproduction fuel sender that reads accurately out of the box is random, at best.

 

I've had to properly calibrate plenty of them.

 

That's where I would be looking, for sure.

 

If you still have the original sender, get it refurbished.  A much better option.
