I have just bought a 77 LX Sunbird for parts. The compliance plate says the rear axle is a GU8 which is for the 1900 motor. The previous owner said he had a 350 Chev in the car. When I checked the diff there is a tag on the fill plug saying it is a limited slip diff. Is the GU8 limited slip?

"GU8" only identifies the ratio (3.90:1 in this case).

The car would need to have been ordered with the RPO "G80" to get the limited slip centre, however I'd say it's very unlikely that a Sunbird would've been optioned with a LSD?

You might be able to read the ratio off the flange splash shield though not 100% accurate if the flange has been changed.

If it differs from 3.9, the next thing to do is leave one wheel on the ground and see if you can turn the other with the gearbox in neutral. That will tell you if it's LSD unless it's stuffed.

Surest way is to pull the centre out and have a look.

Thanks guys. I will check all that today. Hopefully it has been upgraded for the bigger engine.

My 77 Sunbird had a fine solid 3.36 single wheeler when I got it which I think was the original

It was a 1.9L Starfire engine
