Hi all.  Just having a look through the parts catalogue and it shows different flywheel to crankshaft bolts for auto (7434778) and manual (7434739).  This is for a 308 auto running T400.  The flywheel is a Yella Terra (haven't spoken to them yet). The only ones that seem to appear on EBay are listed for manual and wondering what the difference is and what can I use to substitute.  Thanks in advance.  Cheers Ron

The manual ones are longer because a manual flywheel is thicker than an auto flexplate.

Hi Ron, an auto uses a relatively thin flex plate. A manual uses a thicker flywheel. The flex plate is very light compared to a flywheel so the bolts will be very different.

Thanks Steve.  The flex plate I have (which doesn't seem that light) is standard YT9903.  I did a bit more digging and found the YT bolts to suit but they are $79 a set.  Are they that much better than ARP or are they dreaming?  Cheers Ron

You'll probably pay $79 for proper arp flex plate bolts, I'd go with the arp myself.

Hi Gary.  The ARP 100-2901 are $20.54 a set, according to EBay from Precision Industries in Melbourne.  That's why I was unsure given the big discrepancy.  Cheers Ron

Buy them, at that price for sure. Precision are a decent company. Don't forget arp give a dry and wet torque setting. Obviously use the 1 that suits you. Gary.

Thanks Gary, you just gave me a headache. LOL.  You will know from my previous questions that my mechanical knowledge is limited to say the least, and I had no idea about wet and dry torque values until you mentioned it.  I did a quick google search and got more confused.  I'm only guessing but I assume that where a manufacturer provides a torque setting it is based on what their instructions are for fitting ie. lube or not. So if that rationale is correct, then whatever settings are provided in the manuals I have, should be fine provided I do as instructed.  Fortunately I don't possess a torque wrench so can't get into trouble.  My son is a former mechanic and so I call on him to help with anything critical in the build but it is still nice to get these types of comments so I learn and at least understand when discussions take place.  Cheers Ron

 

On a slightly different matter I just bought a Bosch starter motor (BXH 136) at Repco.  List price was $323 but they had discounted it to $170 as it had been sitting around for a while.  Anyway went to Precision Int. to get the bolts for it and the guys there were very pleasant to deal with.  Cheers Ron

Ah yes, sorry Ron (dry) no lubricant, (wet) with lubricant. I think arp, can come with the settings they recommend mate. Well hopefully you son has a torque wrench still. Precision may have a flywheel/flex plate lock to bolt into the teeth and help you torque the bolts too. You may also want to see if they do a converter to flex plate bolt & crank balancer bolt in arp, aswell. I have them in my ls1 engines no problems. Gary.

Thanks for the heads up Gary.  Just been speaking with my son and the list of bolts etc is growing. Luckily Precision isn't far from me. Next decision is the torque converter so I expect to frustrate/annoy the guys at TCT, TCE over the next few days. LOL. .  Yeah my son has kept a lot of his good Snap-on tools.  He actually built my T400 as he specialised in building transmissions.  Wish me luck.  Cheers and thanks again.  Ron

Thanks Gary.  Here is a classic example of me getting it wrong.  I kept referring to the fly wheel when in fact, being an auto it's a flexplate.  Well guess what, I have a YT9903 flywheel which I've just taken back to be exchanged. LOL.  Go back 2 spaces and miss a turn.  Anyway ordered the converter yesterday. Cheers Ron
