Which state would have had number plates with the prefix HBP? As in, HPB 677. They were on a car in the late 80s. Certainly not W.A.

Victoria ran black and white H series plates in the early 60's. HPB would be circa 1962.

Not Tasmania Laurie as all 2 letter prefix until personalised combinations came in mid 90s I think.

NSW in mid 70s had H... plates.

 

My hatch has HTJ-756 as it's original number plate combination from new in 1976.

Thanks Liz. I am leaning towards that rather than Vic plates from the 60s.  You may have helped solve a big riddle there.  The plate that I am looking at (not the one above) doesn't come up on the NSW plate register though. Is there somewhere I can find old details if the car became unregistered 20 years ago?

Definitely not QLD because they had three numbers followed by three letters (eg. 123ABC)

 

And definitely not ACT because all their plates started with either "Y" (eg. YAB123) for private vehicles or "Z" (eg. ZAB123) for govt. vehicles.

 

Personalised plates not withstanding of course.

 

If it was still NSW registered 20 years ago then at least that should be in the digital era record-keeping-wise, so you may be able to submit a request under the GIPA Act 2009 (see here).

 

If you go back into the 80's you start getting into the paper archives and they don't want to know anything about it... I believe they still have the paperwork stored but they won't search it (short of getting a subpoena anyway), I've asked before.

 

If you have a chassis number and a friendly copper they may be able to run a check but odds are they won't find anything unless it's come under police attention in the years since?

By 1987 Victorian rego numbers were well past HPB for a letter sequence. The plates were green and white and would h have been ctarting with Cor d

My HZ PV was AAA  and that was first regoed in 1977 and my VK Commodore was CUE that was in 1986/87.

So probably NSW.

Yeah, this car could have been licenced at any time, but according to an old Vic police list it existed in 1987. The computer they were using at the time reached into NSW as well as S.A., but doesn't actually say which state in its results. The search that was done on it was for HZ engine numbers, and I have got a rego number from that. No other details unfortunately. 

I have a pic of a LX 4.2 SL/R with JCA plates, so I guess HBP could be LH?
