Hey all,

I'm looking at a 4cyl LJ and building an engine for it on the side. The 4cyl runs and drives along fine so it may be nice to get the old girl on the road while I build the engine and gearbox that will ultimately end up in it.

Does anyone have any advice for giving the little 4-banger a mild boost? I don't seem to be able to find much information on them at all, apart from their odd intake manifold setup. I'd be looking at a basic electronic ignition setup using a Accuspark or Pertronix type retrofit, plus maybe a mild port and polish and aftermarket carburettor, but not much else.

Cheers - boingk

The usual suspects on any engine build will do something better than standard.

Better exhaust will be needed for anything anyway.

Small cam, if you can find one, think there should be places still around that can regrind though.

Better carburettion. Weber usually a good option, or Dellorto.

Most engines will benefit from a bit of head work.

But once you have done all that, it would probably be easier and cheaper to fit a modern OHC engine into it

Series 70 cars had a sidedraft Stromberg and a one piece 4 into 2 exhaust header setup that took hp from 56 to 70. Factory fit but could be hard to find. The Brabhams had a twin sidedraft Stromberg setup that probably added another 5-10hp. These are hard to find and expensive. I might have spare sidedraft stromberg carby and manifold if you don't have one already.

Blacktop 4AGE conversion you reckon? Haha. In all seriousness I could probably get away with a Hilux 4cyl but want to keep it pretty straightforward.

I'll get stuck in with the usual stuff, cheers.

A mate of mine had a Lotus twin cam in a Harry Potter Anglia. Same colour and all.

It was back in the day when people actually drove things like XU-1s L34s and Phase 3s on the road as daily drivers.

When they drove them the way they were meant to be driven too.

The Anglia embarrassed quite a lot of the number cars in the day.

It had original looking steel wheels, albeit just a little bit wider. But lovingly painted in chipped white house paint.

There wasnt a standard letter/number car it didnt beat in off the lights racing. To the speed limit only of course. (snicker snicker)

He also had an LH Torana badged up with 1900 numbers.

But it was anything but a 1900.

It too caused looks of shock when it launched at the traffic light duels.

Put a rodeo 2 litre in & whack some boost up it's clacker, or a rotor. You need to at least be as quick as a commodore ect. I've seen gemini's with rodeo turbo'd engines in the 11's. Heck even a 13 second car would be fun. Forget the standard engine. "Not even granny be scared to drive it" as Tony said in running on empty.

Yeah, not looking at running the standard unit long term, but I find getting something on the road right away keeps me motivated... and keeps the missus happy. Part of the reason I'm looking at a 4 door is I have a family, so would like the practicality. Plus I'm cheap.

Boost would be fun, but you can always do that on the standard engine for shits and giggles before putting a better one in...
