I have started the resto on my SVO XU1 and have a question regarding the front panel. All other LJ Toranas i have worked on in the past have had the gap between the nose panel and the filler panel leaded up and smoothed out.

My car has no sign of this having been done and all the sheet metal is factory and all spot welds still in place, i have seen other XU!s  the same my question is do i leave this as is or lead it up, or is this a common theme for SVO XU!s or maybe Brisbane build cars.

Cheers Steve

AFAIK those joints were always lead wiped during production. This means the nose panel (at least) on your XU1 has been replaced at some time in the past.

The repairer must have had access to a spot welder if it has been spot welded rather than spot bronzed.

Perhaps some pics of the spot welds if possible?

Thanks Dave the thing that has thrown me is that the spot welds on the front are very similar to the multiple spots on the front gaurd's i will investigate this more tomorrow.

Panel shops have had spot welders for 25 years mate, or more. They weren't cheap back then though. & definitely lead wiped òn lj, and brisbane built cars ect.

My theory is if it's been sand blasted that can strip out the lead (maybe) and no one notices and the car gets finished with gaps there.

I've seen a few like that but it definatley should not have a gap join.
