Hi guys,

My LJ has had the holes for the mirror filled, do l legally need to refit one?
I have recently seen quite a few cars with no mirrors fitted.

Cheers Graham.

ADR 14 (1/01/1972) calls for an external rear vision mirror on the drivers side.

AFAIK if your compliance plate has that ADR number on it then the vehicle must comply with that design rule, even in 2019.

No need to make holes.
There are several available that clip on.

I couldn’t bring myself to make holes on the hatch or blue LJ.

G'Day,

My LJ has never had side mirrors and there's no holes from previous fitment either.

I've been lucky in that it has never been questioned by any inspector for rego including when I had it was Blue Slipped 15 years ago.

Interestingly, the only people who question it are other Torana owners when it's at a car show.

ALL Holdens (including Toranas) built after Sept 1966 left the factory with a driver's side rear view mirror. There are no exceptions other than export vehicles. They were not compulsory by law as such, but it was part of a safety package GMH were promoting in those days. If you had an HK or an LC, you could remove it & still get the car registered.

As mentioned above, it became compulsory on 1 Jan 1972 for all cars sold in Australia under ADR14. If your car has ADR14 stamped on the compliance plate it must be fitted. The Blue Slip inspector simply missed it.

If there are no signs of holes in the door, the door panel itself (or skin) must have been changed.

Yes, I'm sure you're right about my car having had a door or door skin replaced at some stage. I still can't bring myself to drill holes in it though so it remains mirror-less ;)

Cheers,

Liz :)

Having more dealings with insurance companies, it wouldnt surprise me if they denied a claim on a vehicle that didnt have a mirror if it should have.

Their fine print usually says they can deny a claim if the vehicle is unroadworthy in any way.

First up though, I hope you never need to make a claim.

Cheers

That's a very good point, Rob. I never even thought about that and I have just changed insurers too.

Hmm...something to think about.

Cheers,

Liz :)

Let me know if you want correct hole dimensions & sizes Liz, Aussie muscle car parts, are selling new mirror sets & you can find them, on their ebay store. Left position i think is just a reversal of the right by memory. If you choose to fit a left hand aswell. Gary.
