Wazza,

if thats going on your car might be better getting a different design to avoid the outer coming off, if its going on anything other than a stock red motor.

Cheers H

There is always confusion about which balancer fits what with Holden 6-cyl Red/Blue/Black motors.

There are basically 4 different types.

They are in 2 'groups':- 8 degree & 12 degree. This refers to the type of timing cover the engine has. The change did not occur at the intro of the Blue motor as commonly thought. The first year or so of Blue motors have 8 degree timing covers & balancers.

All Reds & Blues up to 1981 have the early timing tag, for HQ onwards, they are marked up to 8 degrees. For the Blues 81 onwards & Blacks they have the 12 degree tag & the TDC position is different to the earlier engines. If you use an 8 degree balance with a 12 degree timing cover, your engine's TDC zero timing mark will not be correct.

Then there is the change for the Blue/Black 202/3.3. These balancers have a thicker pulley i.e. more weight. This was to suit the new crank with the extra counterweights.

The 2 common balancers are the early 8 degree Red style. Then there is the 3.3 thick pulley to suit  the 12 degree timing cover.

The 2 rare ones are the early Blue 3.3 with a thick pulley but marked to suit the 8 degree cover. The other less common one is the 173/2850 Blue motor with a thin pulley but suits the later 12 degree cover.

They will all fit & work with any motor, but you must check that your TDC zero is in fact the true top dead centre of piston no. 1.

Thanks Dr Terry,
As this has the larger side ,
I take it it's the extra weighted balancer for the blue/black 202 3.3 ,
Do you agree?
I'm looking at using a blue crank in a red 202 and was going to put the xu1 retaining plate on the balancer if it's suited ?
What's your thoughts ?
As there is no timing mark , it appears I need to add my own once I've got TDC on #1 cyl
Do you agree?
Any other thoughts or comments appreciated,
And yes I I'll use a blue timing cover on the red block
Thx for all comments wazza
