A series of newspaper ads from 1979. I guess not all dealers were enamoured by selling Sunbirds.

Chris Young told me that they (Young and Green) were always in trouble from the zone office in the 70's for not selling enough 4cyl cars, that their volume was down. Their response always was that people in Hunter Valley didn't want 4cyl cars in general, and those that did bought the competition's cars as they were better cars. Their 6cyl and V8 volumes were high, yet they were being criticised for not moving 4cyl stock!

You can get a lot in the boot of a Statesman. I remember my first drive car (HQ Deville). I once had 3 whole grey motors in the boot. I used to deliver grain too as I worked at a pet supplies. You’d easily fit 3-4 60kg bags of wheat in the boot. 4 x weekend suitcases and 4x sets golf clubs (70’s carry bag not a huge one like today) would easily fit in the boot of a Statesman or Fairlane. Even the 1968 Impala and Parisienne were sold new into 1971 so these were still in car yards as used cars in the late 70’s.

A bit off track but I remember the days of having to buy sly grog on a Sunday.  Guy down the end of our street had a big yank tank (not sure what) but boy he could fit a lot of beer in the boot. Cheers Ron

My father had a 69 Impala 327. Load in mum and dad plus 6 kids. Boot was huge. The locals use to laugh at the "big yank tank".

I used to drive around in a ‘57 Chevy. It got called a tank tank too, but it and a HQ Statesman are small compared to a VE/VF. Even my HJ Premier sedan looked tiny parked next to my V2 CV8.

Most cars have crept up in size over the years. My older brother had a 71 Corolla as his first car. Compare that to a Corolla today the 71 model was tiny.

Yes. I saw an LH Torana driving the other day and it was dwarfed by a Suzuki!
