hi.
My hi beam blue dash light stopped working.
it was working until recently i replaced the i think it was uc/commodore (plastic thing) indicator stick with an RS lx stick.
standard to hi lights continue work as expected.
what could be problem, how, where to best investigate  and fix?
thanks.

Could be as simple as a blown bulb.

yes. it could be a blown bulb that's also the first thing i thought of but it also could be something else.

a blown bulb would mean dismantling the dash which is an unknown and so time consuming activity.

my thought is that perhaps there's some known checks or issues with this thing and also I'm hoping to be able to start at an easier point and work my way there rather than starting from most difficult bit.

What did you actually have to change wiring wise to change over sticks?

From memory of the wiring diagrams, if the lights are changing beam, the lamp should be getting the power.

It may well be as simple as a blown lamp. They dont last forever.

Check that first.

Checking for a blown bulb is prob the simplest thing to do.

 ok thanks.

not good if that's the simplest thing to do in the situation. after having checked on this site about how to do that and others have been stuck and had trouble removing/replacing the dash.

is why i'm trying to avoid and not do anything unnecessarily and break something in the process.

wiring change from the plastic stick to standard is the 2 wires only - on off for hi beam so it isn't separate to the beam indicator.

wouldn't be surprised. the headlight low beam died recently just from doing a test a few time times the past year.

guessing it's after sitting there 20 year they die, some fuses also fell apart.

even have spare bulb in slr dash if it is that that I can swap the bulb from.

The fuse "box" itself can be a problem too at that age.

The contacts for the fuses tend to have corroded somewhat over time.

The best fix for them is judicious use of the grey end of the old grey and white eraser.

The one that supposedly erased ink, but just wore through the paper.

Maybe plan ahead and get a whole heap of LED replacements before you start.

You can even change the colour too if you want.

The dash harness should be easy enough to disconnect.

The speedo cable is usually the tricky bit.

Cheers

Removing the cluster is very simple. Its just a few screws. Just grab your multimeter and check for continuity across the globe. Confirm you have clean contacts in the globe holder. Confirm you have a GND on one terminal of the globe holder. Flick to H/B and confirm you have 12v on the other terminal of the globe holder. Pretty quick and easy.

thanks. sounding less of a worry now with the advice and also doing the homework reading up on it. doesn't help that i'm slow at getting stuff done and want to get it registered asap! might be trying to sneak this one through I reckon. having to work full time job and domestic duties doesn't help make time for the important stuff here.
I'm organising LED lights for it as have been reading about dash removal and dash light situations and it came up..
have already replaced roof and hatch lights with LED's. glove box next but I also kind of like how the dash twist dimmer works and don't know if i'll get that effect with LED's
so did some tests. checked all works, the dash light twist dimmer, twisting and turning to see how it's all working.
discovered new functionality, twist all the way left turns the interior lights on! I don't think i knew that. or had forgotten it. but also knowing that these functional things take time just like how it took the year it took to figure out key tricks to open doors and fog lights on the 370z ha!
motorbikes are so much easier!

I will also replace and tidy all fuses.

HA! at the moment I reckon that's going to be take more than just me to get the bulb moved! :P

am doing whatever I can to avoid dash remove and refit and whatever i break or self destructs in that process.

looking at spare dash the earths are daisy chain type connected to indicators and the power is a green to the big fitting. I can try see where that leads to and how the power is. also can touch the bulb underneath dash and if remove steering wheel dash fittings may be able to get right in there.

dash came out.

bulb came out.

bulb tested.

spare bulb tested.

wiring looked at.

steering wheel off and checked the switch- it's new from RS and so i took off and changed the joins. there's 3 connections on the switch but 2 wires.

1 earth and 1 green one.

still not working.

Time to whip the multimeter out to avoid any further guess work.

Multimeter or at least a test light.

Get the map for the car too.

Jaycar and Supercheap sell cheap multimeters good enough to do car electrical work.

It is pointless chasing electrical problems without test gear and a map.

You may end up finding the problem, but it will be luck only.

Is the earth to the dash, and the earth connection from the hi indicator to the earth point continuous?

Cheers

Rob

for sure will be luck.
I think to answer earth question - yes it is.
there's 2 wires from the the new hi on/off switch.
1 is the green one goes to the big plug where it goes back to dash and to lights. (my guess).
other is the one goes to the somewhere metal on the dash. if this isn't connected. or the other! then also the hi beam lights switch and the dash light don't operate.

there's 3 connections on the switch, does this mean anything and should be wired in any particular way or used rather than the 2 I describe in my setup?
Also how to connect them properly, solder? they are like pin points!

in the meantime am hoping it's ok with the vechicle registration inspection if i don't get it done.
