a machine shop wants to charge me $100 for alloy welsh plugs i cannot see the sense in this when i can buy a set of brass welsh plugs for $32 including delivery.

Agree, no sense at all but they can see Dollars. Brass welch plugs will do fine.

Don't recall seeing alloy ones before. 

Usually brass or stainless

Or fancy screw in ones

Stainless is overkill for a street car, I used to fit them to marine motors.

 

Brass is the best all round. Cheap, easy to fit, don't corrode.

Does anyone have an opinion on the holding pressure of brass welsh plugs? I neglected to go to screw in plugs on a 308 now with 70-90 psi oil pressure, 15 psi coolant pressure cap...
