G'day guys,

just wanted to get your thoughts on this date code on a 13inch 5.5 nibbed rim.

Firstly I bought 6 Nibbed 5.5 inch rims and am working my way through them by sand blasting and prepping.  The first one has GM logo and 73 stamped in it.  This makes sense.

The second has GM logo and 68 or 89 which none of these dates make sense. Surely in 1968 there were no 5.5 wide rimes in Torana offset then in 89 which I think this is due to more modern GM logo they wouldn't still be making Torana Rims?

Any thought or theories welcome.

Cheers

Marty

Hi

This may be the answer:  Part Number 2813815 was still being used on the LX Torana.

Cheers

I  believe  that  the  second  rim  has  had  an  replacement  outer  put  back  on  the  original  wheel  center .

I  have  seen  quite  a  few  like  this .

Thanks Baz,

So is it feasible that GMH still made rims ten years after that model finished?  I would of thought there would have been little demand for steel rims at this stage with Mags being the popular choice.

These rims had been sitting around for many years by the looks(10-15). I can't imagine the centre being changed all those year ago especially seeing the date is not special.

Thanks for the replies.

If 4cyl Commodores came out with 13 inch rims that might be the answer. But if Gong says the date isn't on the outside?????

I'll check the inside tomorrow.

They did, early Holden pattern too...

I thought the 4cyl Commodore wheels had no caps or plastic caps thus no hubcap retainer bumps?

So you’re alluding to a cheap source for nibbless rim centres. I wonder how common they are. The 4 cylinder discs are touted as an alternative brake upgrade for early Holden running HR drum stubs, with adapter plates, the disc brake stubs and bolt ons being relatively dear to get hold of now, and the Torrie hubs having a lot more offset than HR. The studs are metric of course. Sorry, bit off topic.

They were all thrown away just like the 4cyl Commodores themselves. I remember seeing them off to the scrappers minus headlights and tail-lights and possibly a few other bits and pieces that were saleable like combination switches. No-one even bothered pulling the engines apart for rods either like they did from UC Starfires prior to the XT5 engine release with WB and VC, as all those blue 6cyl had them.

The rotors are just LH-UC ones with metric studs I believe as you say. But I reckon you'll have more luck finding Torana stuff. Diffs were useless too as they were 3.9:1.

I've converted a few from 4cyl to 6 or 8, never took much notice of the rims though - just chucked em out in favour of 15'' mags or pursuit rims...
