This topic would have been discussed previously I'm guessing, but my genuine GMH waterpump developed a bearing noise after running my engine for awhile. Car sat unstarted for lots of years so guessing seals hardened up although no water was leaking out of the pump so perhaps bearings just corroded. Anyway can't buy these cast iron impeller type pumps anymore so unless someone has a good original Holden one they can sell me, is there a way to reliably recondition the originals? I've since fitted a Repco new one but these days they have this tinny looking impeller and I suspect they are Chinese made. Would rather try and stick to the originals when replacing parts on genuine XU1's. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes you can get the bearings and seals and you just need a press to do the job though I’ve never bothered.

The cast impeller jobbies turn up at swap meets now and then too. Don’t forget that the pulley flange bolt spacing changed I think when the 161 and 186 replaced 149 179. Don’t ask me how I know this doh.

Yes they do make the 6 cylinder pump, at least they did anyway. I think that you had to buy them on like ebay at one stage. I personally would like a "gm" casting & rebuild that. Press it apart and check the bearing stores. If someone has got a lj torana 1, with the "gm" cast in the front they'd sell, please pm me. Thanks, Gary.

I bought a cast impellor pump a couple of years ago fairly easily through a local parts shop. It was a "Quinton Hazell" branded pump. Used to be a lot of QH stuff around in the past for many different makes of cars

if the smaller hub doesn’t fit it is an EH HD style. The QH hub looks to be set up to take both style pulley and fan.

Yo can always press the cast impeller off and fit it in replacement of the pressed one.

Reviewing my master parts catalogue it appears the hub bolt spacing changed some time after HR.47fcd3ae8d647b5bb7469ff3ad72ab4a.jpg
Interesting that there was a different pump for the HD X2. I’d speculate this was to do with the water heated inlet manifold common to HD and HR X2s, and nothing to do with the hub.

Did all Holden 6 water pumps from the late 60's and early 70's have GM stamped on them. I'm guessing so by the comment by Grumpy XU1. There must be thousands out there somewhere, would still be hundreds that would suit reconditioning for the purists who own GTR's or XU1's and insist on originality. I guess 45 years is a long time to expect these sorts of parts to be still kicking around.

I'm with Grumpy XU1 if anyone has an original GM stamped pump they want to sell, I'm 2nd in line.

quote to do a water pump for a 6 was $160

does the cast iron impeller aid in cooling better?

A half decent press starts at $200 + if the pump is rebuilt, cleaned, new bearing, shaft ect & it's Australian there's nothing wrong with $160, it's a business, not a charity. There'd be 2 - 3 hours work in a water pump, possibly.

I agree it’s a fair price to do the work if the customer is insistent that is what they want. Okay it is an “original” pump. Is it? $25 will buy you a perfectly good one new non genuine.

Some would rather spend on the part and bolt it on but if you buy a press you might find there are one or two other jobs you could do with it.

Are the cast impellers more effective or is it that they don’t corrode as rapidly?
