Hi,
Pulled this engine to play with sump baffling/ gating.
Runs perfectly on the track, no dramas.
Just noticed the way the cam seems to sit about 2mm rearward compared to bearing location.?
Timing gears mesh well and dont foul on cover.
Is this at all normal.
COMP. cam, solid lifters, roller rockers.
Thanks

Looks like it is still covering the oil feeds. I would be more concerned with looseness or excess play.

I'd pull the timing cover off & check the end float on the cam, I've seen them push the welch plug out the back.

OK, Thanks gents.

Looking at the oil pump drive and dizzy drive, they are only about 1/2 meshing with the cam gear. Looking at the wear pattern, looks like it's been that way for a while....

I'll add to my comment, the cam gear can get pushed of the cam, I'd be checking it, it's only one gasket. When the welch plug gets dislodged, the oil pressure is gone. I haven't got a pic, but the fix is to drill the end of the cam, fit a bolt & retainer plate.

Yes, I'll back off the roller rockers and see how much float/ slop there is in the cam. Appears to be nil atm, but assume that is because the lifters are forced onto it via valve springs.
May as well get it sorted while it is out.
Thanks for the advice.

As above, valve spring pressure removed, end float appx 20thou. ( too much I think ?)

Actually, that number is wrong...more like 1.5mm....tooo much.
Book says 0.007" max.
Off comes the balancer and cover .

I normally aim for .004"or.005". The timing cover will have witness marks if it's walked.

Ta Warren,..
Yes the timing gear has moved on the cam. Not loose, pressed back on flush...felt like a nice snug fit, HV oil pump gear/ torque needed to turn it may have drawn the cam rearward?...is there room within the timing case to drill & tap a locking screw ?..would be pretty tight?

Col, this is what I did with my set up. Drilled, tapped and inserted a grub screw with loctite.

Luv your work Fiend!...thats what I was thinking, unless C/sunk, a bolt/ screw in the middle would stick out too proud with respect to the cover.
Thanks for the pic...speaks a thousand.

Your on the money, I machine a bit off the cam & maybe the gear to fit a washer & countersink hex head bolt.

Check the welch plug at the end of the cam tunnel.

Thanks again Warren,....the welsh plugs are all newish.  As far as the rear one being  "eased" out by the cam movement, I will certainly have a look.

This forum is the best and getting real answers to real questions.......thanks Gents!

Just some feedback Warren...rear welsh plug = good.
Fly wheel still in, used trusty Aldi umbilical cam.
Thanks
