Just finished fitting and welding in both front footwells in a LC. Roughed back the welds. I'M not best welder but capable. I weld both sides. I use a rotisserie. Question. Do people grind back welding flush with metal or leave it slightly proud?

Hi limo,

I weld one side and grind back flush.  Not as strong as leaving it raised but looks factory.

I weld either and sometimes both sides, depending what’s accessible, as long as you can get the grinder on the outside weld. Grind underside flush where ever it can be seen. Not as critical on top where it is covered over.

I butt weld on one side, (outside) make sure I have good penetration, grind flat outside and either leave penetrating weld if not seen at all or dress up slightly if not seen just to smooth out, if seen grind flat. Be very careful if you have lap welded as you will leave the edge very thin and susceptible to rust and being very weak like thin foil if you try to grind the weld flush.

I rarely lap weld but when I do I fill and grind flat on out side to be painted then weld and leave the inside. If I can get to it. When I did complete wheel arch I couldn't get inside fully so drilled holes from outside into over lap. Then welded through and filled holes. But floor pan I leave both sides slightly up then with stone guard under and spray sealer inside levels out. Probably do lot more work than needed but feel better about the finished job.

This one I'm working on is real basket case. Had more hits than ABBA. Lots of damage and previous repairs. Without doing the rust. Been sitting 10 years as shell waiting for me to get interested.
