Been cleaning under my car and have come across stamped numbers both on the gearbox and engine block. Anyone know what/why this is? Bill Mann (Brisbane Qld) did all the work on the engine back in the mid 80's, is this what engine builders did back then?
Unexplained numbers

As for the code stamped on the engine ?
Possibly from your rebuild

Without knowing the cast date of the gearbox I will hazzard a guess that Transmission Serial No. T367046 will have a 3/72 or 4/72 cast date making it most likely the original gearbox for your 5/72 XU1 Mark.
I'm with Warren, the GCJ 27677 number is probably the job number put there by the engine rebuilder.

Thanks S Pack. Funnily enough the gearbox doesn't seem to have a cast date where is supposed to be? I assume its supposed to be in that rectangular area just above the word 'Holden" and below the yellow 'XU' stensil

Yeah that's where the cast date is. I believe there is a cast date albeit very faint.
I might be imagining it but I think I can see signs of a 2 in the area above the E in Holden. That distinct vertical stroke above the L could be the back of a D or E.

Yeh I saw that Dave, but with the naked eye it doesn't reveal anything. Are the dates always cast in this area? I personally knew the two previous owners of this car dating back to 1978 so doing anything shonky like re-stamping dates on gearboxes was unheard of back in the 70's. This box has never been painted either as the yellow XU stencil is still clear. People weren't obsessed about re-stencilling of yellow paint back in the 70's like they seem to these days, So I guess it will remain one of the mysteries.

Not easy with gearbox in car but you should find another yellow 'XU' stencil on top of the gearbox case.
For what ever reason the casting date is rather poor - just the luck of the draw .
Have seen a few Holden cast iron master cylinders with poor casting dates too.
