Hi,

Looking for some tuning thoughts and recommendations.
Car is running as it's driveable - I drove it +100km to garage for registration inspection the other day.
no problems. a bit rough but as I built it myself +20 years ago and it's been sitting since 98 so anything could been done wrong due to build errors so not knowing what it could run like and or deterioration over time.
Did an engine flush and Holley rebuild by dismantling it, leaving in vinegar for a few days then getting kit and replacing where bits match.
basically I had no clue but got it done-where broken attempt to fix.

Mechanic says it's running ok but not as good as it should. And the rebuilt isn't the cause!
Says he put a Carter on it and it's running much better.
I'm ok with that but would also like to be able to run the Holley.
Just because i like the look of it and I believe it's possible.
Was told it can be tuned but needs time. and is more suited for race purpose.
Mentioned is partially due to vacuum and size of manifold.

I have confidence and trust in these guys and will ask them to spend time to tune.
As was recommended them by Perth Torana Club and also knowing that they had a couple more hatchbacks they worked on recently.
Just looking for ideas and options here.
I'd like to be able to do it myself as have been doing so far but am going to have a few difficulties in having the time in near future.

186 block
202 low compression head
redline manifold.
465 vacuum secondary very old (pre pollution design) Holley
Aussie 4 speed.
30/70 cam I think.
larger exhaust.
electronic ignition.
fairly ported head(inc posts removed and allen bolts holding it down there)
suspected larger valves.

Suggestions?
Recommendations where I could take it somewhere?

thanks.

I had a red 202 (blue crank) almost the same as yours in an LX Hatchback. It had a Yella Terra 186 head, 30/70 cam, electronic ignition. It was a Cain 4BBL manifold with Celica 5spd though.
It ran a vacuum secondary 390cfm 4BBL. It ran perfectly. With a 3.08 10-bolt and 14” wheels it used to easily pull my heavy Lewis Clinker and trailer up slippery boat ramps. It used to be able to lap Amaroo Park in sub 70 seconds running shitty old worn out Radial T/A’s, and dynoed about 130hp or thereabouts at the back wheels.
So might be worth either getting the carby professionally rebuilt (maybe $350) or buying a 390?

i like the qft hr 450.. had 465 on and then put the 450 on. no more hp but picked up 45nm very responsive.. almost half the price as the 390

Found an interesting read on manifolds here that backs up mechanics view. as in there are none that are just right for this setup.

Both options sound good, will start looking around for used of either qft hr 450 or 390 and cain manifold and in the meantime .

I had a 30/70 Cam with a 208 and a ported 9 port with Cain manifold, 465 was too much trouble, and square bore better. But found the 500 2 barrel wins hands down. :3gears:

p.s. I also put manifold in a vice to die grinder the ports to match head.

Here is a CAIN manifold.

Mine was slightly different, didn’t have the divider like this one:

John used to make manifolds for Redline too, and they bought all his moulds when he shut up. Which is probably why this Redline blue/black motor one looks similar to the first link:

Hey that’s bloody good! Be quick. I have a John Cain red six manifold to suit if you need one. A lot of good reports on the 390. Manual choke kits are $80 so extra value there. Don’t bother with two barrel Holley. Better with a Weber or WW Stromberg if you want two barrel.

When you have a ported head, it can use the extra cfm.

Even the speedway guy's used 500 holleys.

I have experienced the power and economy of these.

Anyhow, it is up to Chips.
