Hi all

I took my scuff plates off because the underside of them was crap and they were being held in place with an assortment of screws.

I have cleaned the plates up and purchased a scuff plate screw kit from Rare Spares - but they don't go anywhere near screwing down.

I am open to advice on this one - do I just use bigger screws etc or are there alternative kits?

Hi Chris84.  I had the same problem with my WB.  I think the Rarespares ones were the right size originally but I think the scuff plates had been on and off a bit and the screw holes expanded.  I simply got some bigger self tappers but I wasn't worried about the look so much.  Cheers Ron

Or try moving the scuff plate forward or back 5mm or so & drill new holes for the correct size screw.

As suggested the original holes get flogged out with removal and replacement of scuff plates over the years. You could try melting soft solder in the enlarged holes with a large iron and

then either drill a small pilot or try screwing directly into the solder. Make sure the original holes are really clean to get the solder to stick otherwise it shouldn't be difficult. Also don't over tighten the scuff plates

as solder will strip out quite easily.

Bigger screws are a pain because the heads get bigger and stick up more. Rivet nuts are great, you need a bigger hole to begin with and you get a proper thread. Fit some small flush-mount ones and use a small machine screw (I used stainless countersunk allen head).

I agree with 76 Lxhatch above, rivet nuts are great!

I bought a kincrome set but it comes with smooth nuts so I bought knurled nuts from my local fastener supplier

Good suggestion guys on the rivnuts.  I hadn't thought of that for the scuffs but will keep it in mind when I get to it.  I have a kit which I have used on the car to fix some P clamps up with and other small items.  Cheers Ron
