This topic has been discussed before but I just received a repro spare wheel tie down rod and went to fit it and just want to make sure I've secured the spare correctly. I have a workshop diagram but just want to be certain because once its secured its very unlikely I will ever need it (famous last words). Spare is the original nibless that came with the car. Where exactly does the jack sit underneath the spare?

The lower diagram is for LCXU1 and GTR .LJXU1 and GTR may have been the same.

The GMH factory "shop manual - LJ  Supplement ", does not show a difference for LJ, so guessing the above is all good for both models

Ok this makes sense. I assume the jack is wound up somehow underneath the rim until it connects the inside of the rim to keep it from moving around. Thanks for that!!

The Jack seems to be laid on its side somehow. Located above the wheelarch in boot, in the bracketry just below the boot hinge.

See Torana Tough book page 104.

Thats weird? I guess as long as it doesn't move around or rattle. Might try what the diagram recommends and see if it works

See Torana Tough book page 104.

The information on page 104 in the torana tough book about the bottle jacks is incorrect both blue and black were used at Adelaide and ONLY black in Brisbane for the LJ torana.

The picture on page 104 is NOT from me....Also the jack in the picture is the incorrect blue

Cheers

Stick with this set up Mark, the bottom fitment is the correct 1 for you.

Thanks Gary thats what I did, just wasn't sure of the jack placement so I placed it like the diagram then reached under the wheel with right arm and made a couple of hand turns of the jack so it pushes up on the rim effectively stopping the jack moving around. Not sure if this is what factory recommend.

That will do it mate, can't remember if the top piece of the jack fits in the rim groove or a stud hole. But you're spot on now. Did you buy the Rares spares retainer ? Gary.

I've found the spare wheel retainer to be next to useless.  Always coming loose and hard to use.
