G'day guys, Just wondering if you need a key for glovebox locks before you can remove them. I am trying to remove lock from glovebox that came with my project (no key) and after reading some excellent threads on this forum, am having no luck.  I even had a practice lock to work on (not in a glovebox) without a key and pushing first tab in worked first time. I can manually unlock from rear of the one I am trying to extract, and am able to push first slider or tab in, but am unable to remove inner section of lock no matter how hard I try!  Once again, I don't want to cover topics already discussed, but don't want to get the angle grinder out!  Also do top retaining section for lock inside top of glovebox differ from LC to LJ? Thanks in advance, Paul.

You need the key to place the lock cylinder in the locked position then remove the key. Now using a suitable blade inserted into the slot in the lock housing depress the silver tab and withdraw the lock cylinder.

The LC model has a white nylon lock striker whereas the LJ striker is a different style and made of metal.

Hi Paul,

I seem to remember having the same problem and managing to get the lock out with-out key. It was a bun-fight and feel I fluked it so maybe just keep pursuing all the options and it may release.

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate your quick response, I might try a few old HR keys I have lying around to try and lock, also that's for info on striker, I will chase up an LJ one! Paul

Just in case anyone happens to have the same issue in the future, like Dave said, you need a key for lock to be able to remove from housing. Got a locksmith to cut a key for me ($40) and hey presto! was able to remove lock from housing, glovebox. All I need to source now is an LJ glovebox retainer "U" shape thingy, as car is LC and snibs at top of inside glovebox are different. Cheers Paul
