Hi All,

I am planning to build a mild red 308 motor with vn heads, mainly street use.

My question is to all the experts out there, what intake manifold can I use without cutting a hole in the bonnet.

Harrop dual plane. Big $$$ though.

Way way cheaper is the Redline Hiwinder chinese copy. Single plane. It needs 1/2 an hour with a die grinder to knock the dags off in the plenum.

There are others but they are aimed more at 355's and are marginal at best for bonnet clearance

Edelbrock Performer

Not for VN heads you wont!

Thanks,

I was thinking of going 355 but maybe when it was licensed, but if it limits my options maybe I will stroke it before hand. What are the options for a 355  ?

There are plenty of 350ci options out there. Have a look at the COME site, and also keep an eye out for ex HSV engines as there were a fair few made as 5.7L/350ci engines that you could get a crank and rods from, and copy the block clearancing from as well.

There is a ready to go 4spd pattern bottom end on Gumtree too in Penrith with VN-VS style heads camshaft, but it is not 355ci, it is 360ci (60 thou). I can't easily add links here but search Holden 355 $5000 on Gumtree. Might be worth doing the sums against what that one costs.

Torque Power air gap dual plane? - you might need to find the right air cleaner though if you want to keep it inside

Not sure what you mean by what are the options for a 355 - internals? or are you still talking manifolds?

60 over 355 is on it's last legs and pushing the friendship considering the extra rod angle with the longer stroke and the inherent thin bores.

True, but also depends on what the engine is used for. There are lots of 60 over 308, 327, 350 over the years that have led long lives. From memory the ad showed it had been sonic tested too. Not worth the asking price though but might be worth it if could be negotiated cheaper. The link below looks like a decent setup and in WA too, from memory that is where the OP was? Comes with a manifold too. Not 100% sure in the bore size though. 0.040”?

The redline hi winder and the COME single plane will fit under a standard bonnet no problem.

Why wait until it’s licensed to go large? No one will know unless you tell them.

The Torque Power dual plane air gap manifold is awesome. Have used one and would again. Very good power delivery all round. And will power up to 7000rpm if you are that way inclined. Can get them under the bonnet too.

Why not start with a 304 block?

Suppose going back to the OP first question below  - what horsepower are you chasing Martin?

You say a "mild" but to some on here "mild" is 750hp  :D

Good luck with 750hp Holden V8. I wouldn’t even think about 550hp with someone else's time and money.

I use to run a Redline Hi Winder with 2" spacer on my VN headed 355 with 750DP. Fitted under the bonnet just with my air cleaner but i got a bigger air cleaner and cut the whole.

Would have thought the " " and the smiley face sort of implied i was being a bit on the clever / smart / funny side

It is achievable though  ...  even with someone else's time and money

Thanks all you for the info, sorry swarbs I did mean manifolds. I guess it all depends on how much I want to pay and how far I want to go.

I wont be drag racing with it but would like something that will have some balls and sound grunty.

From what I have heard WA laws and regulations are shit and you need engineering for every little non genuine thing you do. That's why I was going to go with a red v8 block instead of something later or old school chev. I was however going to through a Mr gasket on it when it was licensed as I have 2 bonnets for the occasion. From what I heard I would need to license it as a hot rod or just use on club events or am I wrong (Hopefully I am).

Has any of you had any dealings with these kinds of issues in WA, how anal are they.

I appreciate all your advise and comments, thanks.

My experience in WA, they are anal on some things and not on others but that also varies day to day and different locations. I went to Welshpool, they literally glanced over the 5 speed and 4 wheel disc brakes but done me for 3 decibels over on noise. From what I’ve seen they don’t really seem to care about engine prefix to see if it’s a late model block, as long as the engine number in the car is the same as on the rego papers. Make sure your windscreen squirters work along with the heater fan. They guys who looked at mine didn’t mention departure angle of drop tanks but as it was fitted long ago it wasn’t engineered. It’s a good solid tank so the engineer done his thing and stamped it.

I wouldn’t get a 60’ over engine, I’ve had a couple and keeping them cool was a battle although some people have a bit of luck with them. Hit and miss I think.

As for power I’d go the 355 stroker and they put out plenty of power done right especially low down where the LS is ordinary

Good luck

Am running a 355 in mine Martin

Have kept the car deliberately what Holden ran in the day for that very issue - 308 Carbied  - T10 - Salisbury (beefed up)

Running discs all round as per A9X so no issues there - fronts are slotted HQ for that bit extra stopping power

Do a bit of homework up front to see what works for you

Thanks guys,
I think i will go 355, it came with a nine inch and I’ve got a top loader to through in it. Im still a long way off but i am trying to get lots of bits and pieces done so it will come together quicker at the end.
