I have been making a few changes to my LJ and recently fitted a new rocker cover and oil catch can.

I know that all motors have some blow-by but how much is too much?

Now I have the vented catch can it has a flow of 'steam' at idle etc

The motor runs great and hardly used any oil on a recent drove from Melbourne to Sydney.

Below is a video.

I have seen this on other red motors before but is this too much blow-by and a sign the motor is on it's way out or is it pretty normal?

So, does the catch can have a baffle in it ? As in, from the pcv valve, go over to the catch can, if it has any oil in it, it will drop to the bottom, it then has another hose going back to the intake manifold, which will probably split in 2 like the xu1 does. The baffle inside stops the oil from being able to come back up and over to the intake. Some states don't allow venting to the atmosphere like you pretty much have. Try that & see if it reduces the effect. A compression test would be a good idea aswell. Gary.

I'm no expert on catch can setups but looks like there is no PCV in the system and one of those hoses from the catch can should be going to the inlet manifold not back to the rocker cover.

Yep, that's how it should be run Dave, just like you said, pcv from the rocker cover over to the catch can, then over to the intake manifold, should solve the issue, there's plenty of catch cans with crap baffles or no baffle. You shouldn't see anything, but on really hot days, you might smell the oil out front, as you walk past.

:spoton: Yep, steam, not oil. Oil lingers.

If that was a cold start, it's probably OK.

Thanks for the replies.

My understanding of a vented catch can setup is the man part of its function is to stop the contaminated air being sucked back into the motor so it just has clean air to burn and this also helps keep oil and crap out of the induction side of the motor keeping things cleaner in general.

It does make sense that there would be no ‘steam’ if there was a pipe run to the vacuum point on the intake, although on my can both vacuum points on the manifold are joined with a y split and run to my large XU1 type brake booster.

These two setups look like they are plumbed the same as mine.

Without a PCV setup you need much bigger breathers than with. Even then you can expect some side effects, its all a trade-off.

It’s funny how we tend to like to dick with the factory set up. People running grey motors in the earlies are talking about retrofitting PCV.

I’m fitting a canister to my HK so I don’t have to smell fuel.

Gatti, does your catch can have a baffle above the 2 an fittings inside & yes, does the rocker cover have baffles under the elbows ?

What's the can catching? Oil or water? As said looks like steam. Some condensation is normal but should be gone once hot. Mine was catching a bit too much water and I had a water jacket seeping into the sump.

Sorry for the slow reply, I've spent the last few weeks camping on Fraser Island with the family

Both the catch can and cover have baffles in them.

The catch can is for catching oil.

I'll stick with this setup for a while and see how it goes.

Cheers.

i bought one of those blow by meters after i thought i was getting pressurisation in the valve cover. When i installed it i realised that i had put a restrictor in there by accident as something was getting crushed where i had a join to route the breather down near the wheel well . I ran it up on the dyno and there was about 1.5 CFM of blow by which seemed to be pretty normal for the engine size and rpm. So maybe try find something with a gauge/meter

Browsing Torana videos on YouTube tonight and came across this little Beast.

It has a shot at the start of the breather and it dies the same thing,

Above, Glen was asking what the Can had caught in it, not what it was intended to catch, seeing what is in the Can might tell you if its predominately water or oil.

My bad, I misunderstood.

I haven't driven it much since fitting the Catch Can but I'm taking it out on an Australia Day Cruise this weekend so I'll have a look after that.
