G'day All

The gearbox (trimatic) in the wife's Hatch has some sort of quick shift kit in it and I want to get rid of it as it clunks into the diff too hard especially when she is driving it.

AND yes, she can't be told how to drive it and I do value my life so I'm not about to try to teach her

When I got this box some time ago from a member here I didn't know that it was like this and also wasn't told it was like this, so does anyone have any idea on what other box I can put into it without too much fuss and too much $$$$$$'s

The motor is a genuine 186S and does have a fair bit of go in it for a 6

Still want to keep the original console and not have to modify it.

Any ideas  :dontknow:

Thanks

Might want to check your uni joints if it is clunking pop. I’m with the others. Just get the trimatic rebuilt standard. Only reason to change would be to get overdrive, which is a bit of mucking around with adapter plate etc.

Agree, find the problem. If you have to get another box don’t be put off by a LH shift box from a WB or VK, just knock the roll pins out in the shifter and swap it around. Or use a HQ-HZ TH400 shifter, same thing as swapping the arm around on an M40 shifter.

The popular modification to give quicker shifts involves drilling out a couple of the holes in the valve body separator plate, and its easy to go too big and it will bang into gear excessively. I agree with everyone else though, stick with the Trimatic for simplicity's sake and it doesn't have to drive like that.

Geno, as I did not know what was the reason for the quick shifting and was not told it changed that way before I bought it, I was asking for ways to fix it as it clunks too hard through the tail shaft into the diff and no, the uni's are OK

I have a  mate David in Young who had a fella do his box for his A9X replica Hatch and his genuine SL/R 5000 and this fella is an ex Holden mechanic who has spare boxes of unknown quality ie fixed, need fixing so I will contact him soon to get this quick changing box fixed to how it should change

David's Barbados Green LH 5000 was a 4 speed but in David's words "I'm getting too old to shift gears" so that is why he changed that to an auto.

He's still got the original box etc and will be keeping that if he ever sells it which I don't think will be too soon in the future

I've got a heavy duty clutch in my SS so maybe it might not bee too long before I go "auto"

G'day Geno

Yes i knew that and my main aim is to get that problem rectified so the missus doesn't doesn't keep on giving the diff a hard time

She also manages to do the same with the brakes thinking she is still driving the 4 wheel disc braked VE Dunnydoore instead of a 42 year old Torana

You know, run up quick to a give way/stop sign or roundabout and brake hard instead of just letting the car run down in speed before those intersections

I think most women are tarred with the one brush as I've heard that sort of thing from others about their other halves driving

I had the same problem with my Trimatic. It was a dog of a thing to drive.

It also that staged modification with the valve body holes drilled for harder shifts.

I got the auto reconditioned & did the same with the Q-jet carby. Adjusted the new modulator & put back in the correct size vacuum port.

A proper tune on the carby to suit the motor & auto made a huge difference to the shifting behaviour of the car so don't neglect those other important areas!

Cheers

A bigger converter will fix both your problems.

it will soften the shifts and give the wife a quicker take off from the lights!

Couldn't you just swap the valve body from a stock Trimatic? My understanding is that they are all physically identical, but the valving is different between some variations.

^ You'd probably only need the separator plate, but you would have to make sure you have the right one
