Just wondering if there is any thing needs doing to the tacho when motor is changed from 6 cyl to a V8. Also have installed an electronic dissy. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Should be a selector switch on the tacho to change from 6 to 8.
You will be lucky these days if the tacho actually works.
As for working with the electronic dizzy, that can be hit and miss depending on the type.
But if the tacho wire is connected to the negative terminal of the coil, in theory it should work.

Thanks for that. Will pull tacho out of housing and look for switch. Can see nothing on back of unit. All gauges were working couple weeks ago before we did engine transplant. Still getting it fitted and bits and pieces done. Will know in the next week or so.

Shouldn't have to pull the tacho mate, just flip the cluster housing and you will find the slide switch.

If it will not read the electronic disy take it to GaugeWorks He put a Gauge into my origonal dash so it would read my MSD ignishion, Origonal face and it looks origonal and works well. I think he has now moved to 138 Main North Rd, Prospect ...

If there is a rattle noise in the guts of the tacho when you give it a bit of a shake, it means the toroid has fallen off.
Very common problem.
There is a replacement part for it, but it is very fine wire and best left to someone with experience to solder it back in.
Probably best to get a new movement fitted if it is at that stage.
If it is still in place and works, it would be advisable to get a neutral cure silicone and put a few dabs around it to keep it in place.
It will be ready to fall off any day now.
Sikaflex is good.
The toroid is a black round piece about the size of a 5 cent piece and less than 10mm thick from memory.

Interesting reading. My gauges all worked fine when 6 cyl motor pulled out before xmas. We have been fitting in a holden v8 and didnt want to bugga tacho with wrong imput. Motor transplant has taken longer than expected, hot weather and unplanned bits and pieces needed. Changing from 4 speed to auto, alternator bracket, lengthening some wiring, finding some convertor bolts, exhaust ect. Still an easy swap but taking time and doing it properly.
Relying on a mate for most of it as my health is buggered with daily chemo knocking me around big time. It will be back on road soon though, cannot wait.

All things being equal it shouldn't damage anything to have it on the wrong setting, the tacho will just read 25% faster because it's getting 4 pulses per revolution with the V8 instead of 3 pulses per revolution with the 6.

All things being equal it shouldn't damage anything to have it on the wrong setting, the tacho will just read 25% faster because it's getting 4 pulses per revolution with the V8 instead of 3 pulses per revolution with the 6.
Isn't that 33% faster ?

I guess so, but it would only be 25% slower going the other way so how does that work out?

If you start from 3,000 to 4,000 that is 33% increase. i.e. 1,000 divided by 3,000 = 1/3. (33%)
If start at 4,000 & reduce to 3,000 that is a 25% drop because 1,000 divided by 4,000 = 1/4 (25%).
