Hello Members,

Was watching a bit of Street Machines and started wondering, how many of them might have been a limited edition. Not cars that left the factory to become Limited Edition. Rolled of the line . All Australian made. For memory and I could be wrong. Valiant made a rare car in Australia ? Could be the most limited Australian manufactured car ? Or was it manufactured for Australia. Maybe assembled in Oz. Bot overall . Australian Production Cars ( Limited Edition Factory Made).

Thanks you for your reply's in advance.

They were 'limited' by the number of 2 door bodies they had left.

Going by memory there were more LE coupe made than HJ GTS coupe, HJ LS coupe, HQ XW8 and HG GTS350. Probably also more than HQ V8 Monaro, HG V8 Monaro and HT V8 Monaro (GTS far outsold Monaro in these).

It is actually a HJ GTS that was dressed by Leo as an LE concept. Cool car, I saw it at Warwick Nationals.

Which one?

HQ XV4 (253).
HQ XW8 (350).
HJ.
HX.

Large amounts of all of them except for XW8. Even the so called “limited production” HQ XV2 (SS) there was nearly 3000 of them. There used to be at least one of these being wrecked in the local paper in Newcastle every second week in the 80’s.

Didn't realise there were so many versions , so they made these cars to move the left over shells . My favourite car from Holdens is the Efijy

Not really. They stopped pressing coupe panels during HJ, they made enough to see out HJ. They decided to do something special (HJ LE coupe) for the last Monaro (inside GMH they knew only real Monaro was a coupe, sedan was a marketing decision, should have stayed SS, although LE is not actually named or badged Monaro). All HJ coupe body in whites were built at Pagewood towards the end of 1975, but due to fluffing around HX came around so they all (apart from the few HJ coupe built afterwards) were converted to HX (firewall cut out and grafted). Then built during HX. Stories from those involved are that the cars were a nightmare due to so many special bits, metallic red was a brand new thing too. A few were lost in a WA dealership fire as well. Total known count 580 out of the 600 shells that were built late in ‘75.

This is why the Ford Cobra is limited to 400 built. It was a way to get rid of the last remaining 2 door bodies which were proving hard to move.

Yep....I wrote off my first HQ SS in 1975. Found another one but that survived until I bought my SLR5000 in 1977. Were a great car.

They were the only GMH production vehicle with a performance oriented 253, until the VH GroupIII. They came standard with 3.36 rear axle (with 14" tyres) and dual exhaust.

I believe 20+ new LE's were lost in a wharehouse fire. Not sure if they were included in the official numbers produced as they were lost prior to delivery to the dealers. From memory the fire was in WA.

I think the original production number was going to be 600.

GMH had the 14x7 polycast rims in 1972. They were on the SS concept (Premier sedan), then on the 350Z and left GMH on the Ewe’t. They were available on all HJ passenger as option PE1 from 1/75. They could have fitted it to the HJ LE concept but from memory they used Snoflakes like Trigger from Smokey and the Bandit. Probably ended up with the 14x7 due to tyre availability and GM also probably gave them free to GMH.

I also recall snoflakes on a blue GTS sedan which was turboed and I think there was a similar theme coupe which I believe was made out of a black HX coupe made for a 50th anniversary purpose along with a black van and hatchback.

I think there was a yellow Sunbird looking hatchback with flares wearing snoflakes too.
