ZB is unloved as it wasn’t made here and front wheel drive. Lack of a V8 certainly too is a major factor. To me it has to have been deliberate to kill off the brand, nobody surely was stupid enough to think that Australians wanted that car in enough numbers to justify the decision. Surely the smart move would have been to move the entire plant to South Korea or even South of the USA and ramp up LHD but still make RHD off the platform. Plus fit LS3 engines to Colorado and Trailblazer in Thailand. Then they would maintain that point of difference rather than sink into history like Pontiac, Mercury, Oldsmobile etc.

At least VE and VF were assembled here too even if a far larger % of parts (compared to VZ) were made overseas.

Anybody got any pics of a UC SL/X? I just spent an hour going through "The Magical UC Register" and had no joy.

Have there been any bites at the 24.5k yet Warren?

I am looking for SL/X Warren. There was one for sale a couple of years ago, but unfortunately it didn't have very clear photos with the ad.

I am thinking it may have been a 1977 runout model.

So they made a SL/E Sunbird hatch but not a SL/E Torana hatch?

Interesting that both the red & yellow cars have no side moulds considering that the SL/E was a burger with the lot.

I wonder where the X badge came from? Looks like it is added after the SL. I had a 1979 Sunbird Deluxe, it had velour trim but not sure what else was on it to make it a Deluxe. Maybe a clock?

I think there was Sunbird, Sunbird SL and Sunbird SL/E sedan and Sunbird SL plus Sunbird SL/E hatchback.

From memory there was only Torana S sedan as a stand-alone Torana. The Torana SL sedan and Torana SL hatchback were option packages on Sunbird. I think the Torana S sedan still wore U body identification though, the last Torana on a V body would be those early 1978 LX’s.

There would have been no Torana SL/E as it would have taken sales from VB and later VC SL/E. I think Torana was dropped anyway around VC release and only Sunbird continued.

The UC Sunbird was available in all 3 trim levels (base, SL & SL/E) in both sedan & hatchback.

Torana S was sedan only.

Torana SL had both sedan & hatch versions.

There were also Deluxe versions of Torana SL sedan & hatch.

There was also a Sunbird Deluxe in sedan only introduced in July 79.

There were no UCs badged SL/X or SL/T from the factory.

SL/E were Sunbird only.

I had a Green SL hatch and my mum had a Red SL/E ,it had beige velour interior trim ,sports instruments,GTS steering wheel ,twin side mirrors ,alloy rims (think the early Commodores may have shared the same rims) 4 speed manual. It was actually quite good very nice to drive and luxurious inside .
My Hatchback Starfire engine through a leg out of bed on the way back from Cervantes so I ended up putting a 186 in it ,

Sounds like the SL had all the SL/E gear ,
And with out throughAnn a leg out of bed a186 would make a nice difference to the 1900,,
A couple of years ago coming back from Cervanties I did a rocker on a 186S, , thanks to the RAC I got a tow back to Perth for free....

Starfire to red 6 was easy, I did one in a day. Opel to red 6 is a lot more work.
