Hi all,

The time has come to some what restore a CK XU1 back to its 1970’s racing heritage without removing its colourful history in Motorsport going all the way from 1971 to the 2000’s in NZ & then Aus after 2000.

Some will recognise this car from a forum member who is also a top bloke, RIchard.J. He was very good & honest to deal with. Not often do you send the payment sight unseen but it was as described.

The work needed won’t surprise some people that know the car due to having a roll cage extensively added in 90’s & then possibility modified for a targa early 2000’s. To describe the cage I would say it was a work of art & almost early Supercar worthy. It hurts to lose it but must be done.. it’s to much cage & it didn’t run one early in its racing life.

The reason for this work being brought forward is due to an unfortunate accident.....

Before your mind goes too far and think “the silly bastard crashed it”, not the case. I walked into the garage to find a truck battery I had trickle charging on the shelf exploded and hit 4 cars with acid with the little CK copping the brunt of it. BIGTIME! Smart charger not so smart or I’m not. Jury’s out.

I was more worried about 2 of the other cars which have been restored to be honest. The CK, though looked good on the road, was going to get the cage removed & slowly worked on in stages such as the parcel shelf & fire wall repair due to cage modifications, drive it some more then external body/ paint later... all changed in one pop unfortunately.

People, create a charging bay outside of your shed!!

People, insure your cars. Luckily it was as were the other 3.

Shannon’s have been fantastic, I drove the old girl the a good shop & was assessed. Given the nature of the car they could not guarantee what lay beneath the surface & were only covering the paint not old damage or rust that may lay below so a cash settlement was agreed for me to remove their risk. Good on them and I’m ok with that. The problem is she ain’t pretty after the explosion so it’s got to be done.

I’m hoping to reach out for your experience and knowledge with these cars to help get it back to where it needs to be. Parts will need to be sourced.

Please note: I’m a Motorsport man. I don’t really care to much about the type of screw should be in there though I will respect & encourage your advise to help get it close. If or when the day comes to move it on the next bloke can change the screw behind the dash.

I will be using this car! It will be driven & put on the track at times. I’ve spoken to cams Historic guys about some options and I’ll work through those in time. The main thing is to sort the body, get things like heater box & controls back into it & tidy interior.

It ran 48mm Dellortos in the 70’s but originally ran the XU1 triple carbies early in the production series. I will continue to use the Dellortos but will look to get some original carbs in the shed to feel like it’s all there.

The wire harness has been upgraded. It’s a ripper and stay at this point. Like I said, it will be used and it’s done well. I will incorporate the original switches back into the wiring etc over time.

I’ll put some photos up soon to keep you entertained.

Enjoy

DaveA

WoW, what an interesting start to your restoration. I charge my batteries outside on the veranda :)

I also have an ex racer that will be mostly street driven with a few track days per year just for fun.

Look forward to seeing the car’s progress.

Cheers,

Liz :)

Its horrible! I’m on my phone at the moment. When I get to the computer I will load you up some horror shots.

When I bought the car it came with many spares. The rest turned up and caused chaos in my shed so there is stuff everywhere, on the floor around the cars, benches.... everywhere. This happened and went all over that gear before I could store it probably & reorganise the shed. it doesn’t seem to have affected most of it. I still need to do a sweep of everything and check for damage.

I can’t get one of the cars (MK2 Corty) out at the moment to clean off with hose. I’ve got the wiring out of it searching for a fault to the fuel sensor... it’s not the sensor guys :). I thought it got missed with the acid but dots appeared. The cars white so hard to see it until you look for the specks. This one hurts as it’s been completely done and not registered since 1989. Done 80km max in 30yrs. Bugga. Was going to be my wedding car but Sally fell pregnant every time we set a date... 15yrs together and still not married hahaha.

Not at home at the moment but found some pics on phone. The blue box on the ground is the chargers box. It was next to the battery.

The windows open but it might have got too hot

Hi Dave, Adam here. We met mid last year at Collingrove, we run the yellow LC.
Such a shame, I feel for you and hope things progress in your favour.
Hope to see you up there again this season.

Hi Adam,

Thanks mate, yes I’ll have a crack again at some point this year. I just softened up the read springs in the white Torana so I might just get off the line. I reckon I got about half a second of wheel spin the get rid of!! I took it to Mallala for a dust off & was an absolute handful under high speed braking.. as it turns out the upper trailing arm bushes had collapsed and had a solid spin almost topped out in 3rd gear coming into turn 1. Anyway I was happy as it explained the rear being unpredictable. During Resto they should have been replaced but weren’t. I even supplied them to the chap but is what it is.

Look forward to catching up soon

DaveA

Almost mate.. it grew 2 doors;)

This was an old race car I found on east coast years ago. Had a bunch of interesting bits on it so I paid what others wouldn’t. Could find any historical significance so we got the whole lot done. My father drove it after rebuild and further works in SA (as she wasn’t quite right when I picked it up) & said it was a much better car than the old GPC hatch.. I said because it’s new but I think so too ;)

Hi mate,

it was a Victron Energy Blue Smart Charger. It’s fairly new but charged a few batteries fine before. I’m thinking the battery just had enough. I found the missing piece of battery under the white car opposite side of garage

They are a good brand. I’d get in contact and tell them what happened.

Im jumping around topics a little but these are the bushes i referred to earlier that collapsed in the white car. Ive only just started to push the car & rarely has it gone into 3/4th gear due to mostly hillclimbs & Teakle @ PL.This was probably only the second outing its been full throttle 3rd - 4th.

Generally speaking the only batteries I have encountered that have exploded have been subject to a short circuit on the terminals, or, old vented batteries that someone created a spark above whilst they were charging.

Have never encountered one that exploded from a trickle type charger.

All of the others were from basic chargers.

A fair amount of hydrogen is created while charging, and it rises.

A spark above the battery during charging is all it takes.

Well ventilated areas are needed.

They make a huge mess when they explode.

Good luck with the cleanup.

Cheers

Rob

Yep. I supplied SP’s during the rebuild. When I found the lower control arms weren’t done I sorted those but the uppers look done due to the outer tube but weren’t evidently. These would have been 20yr old and hard as a rock I’d say.

About 30 years ago my old man had one on charge on the workshop floor when he fired up the mig welder and it blew up instantaneously. He was lucky we had a tap just outside to rinse himself off with.
