Generally speaking the only batteries I have encountered that have exploded have been subject to a short circuit on the terminals, or, old vented batteries that someone created a spark above whilst they were charging.
Have never encountered one that exploded from a trickle type charger.
All of the others were from basic chargers.
A fair amount of hydrogen is created while charging, and it rises.
A spark above the battery during charging is all it takes.

Well ventilated areas are needed.

They make a huge mess when they explode.

Good luck with the cleanup.

Cheers

Rob

Hi Rob,

It’s all on the shed ceiling too. I’m going to speak to the Home insurance mob & see what can be done. If they quote to have sheets replaced etc it will save me cleaning them up. The rest is interesting as it’s all over parts etc

Just a bit of cage... bloody nightmare to get out!

The original drivers seat is back in. It would have to be mid 90's since it was last in the car at a guess.

Went for a spin after removing and amazingly the chassis felt just as solid even on a comfortable seat. Feels a bit gruntier with a litlle less weight. She was pretty quick before!!

Theres some tidy up to be done where the cage mounted onto plates but pretty happy.

That rim in the last photo would be a pretty rare one these days.

You're lucky you can remove your cage. I can't as mine is built into the shell.

This pic is actually a VS S pack ute, identified by the Ecotec V6 badge on the guard, the new engine released with that model (VS).

The wheels were first used on the VR SS, and as was common back then, relegated to the 'S' of the following model.

Im jumping around topics a little but these are the bushes i referred to earlier that collapsed in the white car. Ive only just started to push the car & rarely has it gone into 3/4th gear due to mostly hillclimbs & Teakle @ PL.This was probably only the second outing its been full throttle 3rd - 4th.

Are you heading back to lincoln this year for the teakle sprint?

Correct, you can also tell it's a vs because the bonnet & tailgate badge are completely chrome, the vr is black background with, chrome lion.

& yes, even the hsv lower spec got last model's wheels.

So people.. I’m going to clear the shed soon to help fund this beast & clear some room.

I am still yet to deal with the house insurance side so I’ll get that done before cleaning to much in case they need to come out & assess but I have some spares not required.

I am also thinking about selling:

-Incredibly good LH SLR 3300. Needs paint & retrim but best body I’ve ever seen for a car that needs paint. Engine bay would almost be left alone.

-The Family Bedford van that use to tow around the old mans grpC cars. It has some red white blue or black under the paint so I had better check that out 1st as it’s a duel wheel high roof Bedford CF with a 283 Chevy in it... been in family for 30ys. I’d hate for someone to pull the paint & find the old HDT van after selling hahaha. Needs a respray and some rust repaired from a leaking sunroof. If it didn’t leak it would be rust free.

-An Auscar with all the Harrop kit in the front & alloy headed 308, floating hubs & harrop rear end (Bw) I’ll part it out but keep the motor... maybe the harrop front brake callipers

1963 Mini with all the Cooper S kit in it inc genuine coopers twin tanks, engine 1275cc, 45mm Weber, bilstein shocks, 120mile speedo & cooper s bumpers etc. looks & said to be an old race car.

Torana spares etc.. I’ll go through it all and see if my son will let me sell mini and if I can let go of the Bedford....

The Torana is a beauty & was going to be my work car but time poor now with this disaster so I’ll let’s you all know when & what I will move along but these are probably going to go due to space issues as well.

If I build another shed I will have room to work but no good at the moment

Hi mate. Beddy was rego’d in SA but expired. Needs a tidy up due to old man sending it to a panel beater to have roof sealed then ironically them storing it outside for 3yrs so it’s needing a bit of trim paint. It’s a runner & replace a fair bit of mechanical to get it back on road for inspection/ transfer of rego ACT to SA inc extractors, exhaust, pads, fuel pump, gauges, carbie kit, plugs, leads etc etc.. has a fridge & bed. Front is a Monza or easy rider or something... it’s a bit wild

SLR is stored elsewhere so I will dig it up. We forgot we owned it for a while as I said I would to buy it then the CK popped up for sale. Me being me I honoured the deal on SLR as I don’t like to stuff people around & I was talking to him for about a month to purchase it. As soon as I got it home it pretty much went off site then flew up to QLD for the little car.

Im in chats with Cools Trim to do the interior an get it back on road. It owes me a bit from the start as it’s the right car. Once she’s at that stage I will probably move it on. I won’t respray it I don’t think just to show how good the body is for the next owner. I’m leaving it away from home due to the other half pressure to sell if she sees it again and realises we still own it :o

Bit of info. The bedford is semi booked in for treatment towards the end of year for its rust repair but that was before battery disaster so all is in the air at moment.

The first batch in the paddock was when it was getting picked up in ACT/ NSW Gundaroo to SA. Engine was seized from sitting around, exhaust on ground & internally nasty. I got the engine running again, exhaust completely redone and drove it to police station to get id checked. I pulled up & waterpump let go leaving a river of gold going past the police officers station. He was good about it.

You can't see the fridge in photo but theres a woman riding a dragon. Its pretty wild!

Those extractors i reckon the old man drove with holes in them since he bought it.. obviously not that big but it always leaked. All sorted now but his maintenance was oil & filters, nothing else i reckon. The axle bearing collapsed killing the diff just before it was taken off road so all that including center got rebuilt.

Cant rember but think its a turbo 350 auto??

Once agian this is future shed depending & not sure how all this work required to fix the effected cars is going to fair up. I took the white torana in for assessment yesterday. He said Bonnet, scoop, full side & roof but not as bad as Orange car.

His shop will be able to do that job 100% inhouse as the car was restored only 5-7yr ago so no surprises.

I struggle with myself selling things when theyre not ready to sell. Beddy's been in the family for a loooooong time

Arcadipane front treatment on the Bedford?

Made them look a lot less like a delivery truck.

Was thinking about getting a Bedford van myself for a while.

Would have been a combo work play vehicle.

But couldnt get rid of my HZ at the time. It had been too good a workhorse.

Cheers

Didn't you say it had black and red under the white paint? It's not one of the Freedom Machine's is it?
