So ive started from the front and working my way back whats the best product and method to get these head light rings up to mirror finish i assume they are stainless steel
Steel wool soap pads and then purple polish on a buff would this give a good result
any suggestions ??
cheers G.

Don't think you'd want to use steel wool, just go straight to a decent metal polish and they'll come up in no time (assuming they are stainless and not clear anodised)

I thought all hq era headlight bezels were anodized aluminium ? If so you will need to remove the anodizing polish & then re anodized them.

Yes, the Q,J,X,Z headlight Bezels are anodised aluminium. The abovementioned parts are the headlamp retaining rings which are stainless steel.

I polished mine on a buffing wheel with the white polish compound. Came up like chrome.

But be very careful if using a non stitched buffing wheel!

The rings are easily grabbed by the wheel & before you can blink can make mince meat of your fingers!
& the ring is #@$^%& 😳
Don’t ask me how I know 😢

That's what I did with mine ,I avoided the tabs on the side and finished off around them with Autosol.

Yep beats doin it by hand! But ya gotta be careful.

I knocked the dings out of the surrounds on the nanna Torana & buffed them on the wheel. Them came up pretty darn good.

Just gotta tackle the rear surrounds now

Back when I used to restore LJ headlight surrounds I had a few occasions where they grabbed on the buffing wheel and got pulled into the arbor which dinged them and I'd have to go back to the panel beating stage and start again. You've got to hope that your fingers don't go along for the ride.

By the way, keep your blocks of polishing compound out of reach of your dogs, they love the stuff.
One of mine got up and grabbed it off the bench when I wasn't there. He ate about half a block and had nuggets with white chunks in them for a day or so. Apparently it's quite common and doesn't make them sick other than maybe an upset stomach. I was worried about it when it happened and googled it hoping that he hadn't poisoned himself.

Sweep up or vacuum up all the debris that lands on the floor from doing this too because my other dog seems to like this.

The only time the ring got caught it did 3 laps hitting & gouging my fingers before i could get away from it :fool: frOck it hurt. Folded the ring in half  & mangled the crap out of it. Lucky i had spares.

Lol my rotty eats rocks & sticks! Bloody knuckle head! But i do leave the polish up high. Haven't seen her sniffing around the crap on the floor :P

And who says that you can't polish a turd. Well you can polish with one, the turds were a convenient size and shape to use on the buffing wheel. The only problem was that the parts came up stripped alternating between shiny and brown.

Since sarcasm is hard to get when typed, I am only joking.

The parts weren't stripped at all.😁

Seriously though,I always use my buffing wheel with caution ,it's great for stainless steel trim as it's straight and you can pull it away from the wheel and there's not many catch points.I also use goggles and leather gloves .

Yep, 1997 as a silly young school kid buffing the headlight rims on my little red cute car.

Thought I’d almost taken my thumb off. Never again.
