This is probably common knowledge so excuse my ignorance as a relative newby to this game, but I have just discovered that my May 72 LJ has all parts with manufacturing date codes of April 72 (D2) My Radiator (D2) brake booster, wiper motor, engine block, diff housing, heads and probably gearbox, but I can't find the date casting on it. Guessing all of you already knew this?

I’d love to have an original date coded radiator for my green car...a cylinder head would be nice too, oh well
Cheers,

Liz its not luck its just money I knew the provenance of my car and payed accordingly for it 2 years ago in a private sale off a mate. You generally get what you pay for if you pay a lot. I think this theory applies to everything in life.

The gearbox date code is on the passenger side towards the front but can be difficult to read.
Almost everything is date coded.

See JP block/Diff housing/Radiator even spare steel rim. Funny how they all (except nibless spare) at D2. Gearbox has the yellow 'XU' stensil but I can't make out the date code.

Yes, agreed on that one. I know I’d have to pay a lot for the correct cylinder head if there was one pop up. M21 date code.

Sell me that diff centre Anthony ha ha ha I've spend $1800 on 2 x LSD centres and they both still whine at 60MPH, not happy. Desperate to find a 3.36 crown wheen & pinion that is in good condition that I can fit to my LSD

Found a vertical number closest to the block. Bloody hard to get your head down there by has '223' so not sure what that means.

The cast date, would be close to that, but Anthony you would have to know that they didn't hand pick a date coded part to go in a whatever date car, it was picked from a parts bin remember.
You're incorrect the parts like xu1 gearboxes, diff housings, diff centres and distributors are all in batches xu1's are not standard cars on the production line eg; baffled diff housings for xu1's build on the 4/9/72 to 8/9/72 at Adelaide are all 21H2D.

Hi just checking numbers on my Oct 73 GTR;
Engine JL431133 has date code 15K3
Head 2811930 has date code 12K3
Gearbox 7433771 has date code 10K3
Diff has date code 4K3
Carby 23-3078 3-42
From what i know the K is Oct, hence all the above should be correct ? only one im not sure is the carby ? I think 3 =1973 and 42 is the week number ?
TIA

If 3-42 is the date code on the carby then the 42nd week of 1973 would be mid October. Your GTR must be a late October completion date.

Were the carbs assembled in Australia?
If we talking about XU1 Zenith-Stromberg carbies, I believe that they are made in the UK.
All the single & dual barrel Bendix-Stromberg carbies from July 1957 to March 1980 (end of Red motor) are made in Australia.

Meaning they’d be like Quadrajets where assembly dates are many months prior to the compliance date of the GMH vehicle in question. For example most GTS327 assembled between June and December 1968 have early January 1968 dates on their carbs. And sure, most of them are the same date, but an outlier or two have turned up.
Yeah, as per my post, the Aussie carbies (AFAIK made in Rockdale, Sydney) would've been close in date, but you would expect the UK ones to be dated 2-3 months prior.
