That's very interesting!! On the rear parcel shelf they've cut speaker holes in mine and I know they were cut by the previous owner mid 80's as he's a mate and I know this cars history back to late 70's, so we can assume that the parcel tray was uncut prior to that. Looking at the above photo, appears the cage mounting points on the parcel shelf is in very close proximity to where you would normally cut speaker holes, so you may be right, there might have been 'signs' in that area prior to speakers. The inside of my boot has never been painted so its original and I've crawled under there looking for signs but nothing unusual stands out other than the horrible mess of the speaker holes by the nibbler machines.

So to try and research Group E participation between say 1972 and 1978 is that difficult?

What a pity its had speaker holes cut, is it still roadworthy?...the reason why i sold past xu1's

Yes I agree it is a pity, but it ticks a lot of other boxes to make up for this.

Mark, your XU1 has all its original powertrain which is a hell of a lot more than can be said for a lot of other genuine XU1's.

I'm not offended by this. Social media seems to encourage blatant honesty and Anthony is just being honest so to some degree its to be applauded. We all know that people behave differently when face to face for obvious reasons. Social media is actually a reflection of a persons true character.

I,d rather have a good xu1 with all its original bolt ons and speaker holes in the parcel shelf than a repaired rust bucket xu1 any day of the week ...

It was the thing to do in my youth or alternatively speakers in the doors. I mean we were young and all of us loved music so not sure how you played our Australian Crawl cassette tapes without speakers somewhere? I would think it was rare to find any LJ/LC without speaker holes? This car of mine was owned by my mate and I owned a 73 GTR and did exactly the same (cut holes in the parcel shelf). We never thought twice about it. But like S Pack and white A9XS have said, my car ticks more boxes than most genuine cars out there crikey I can't even find any evidence of panel damage (from crashes). They all have their little 'issues' . Anthony's car is obviously in perfect condition (seeing it in the Torana tough book) so good luck to him but the comment relating to having sold past XU1's because the parcel shelf was cut must have been back in the early 70's when they were plentiful because even in the 80's, unmolested clean ones were becoming rare (on the Gold Coast at least) so couldn't be too picky about parcel shelves.

Hi all. There is anacdotal evidence that cars in Vic and WA have been refused RWCs where rear shelves have non factory speaker holes. The rear shelf is a structural member and cannot be modified without being "engineer approved". There is no reason to assume that the same restrictions do not appy in the other states. I would guess that it all
depends on the vigilance of the RWC inspector.

Cheers

I've also heard that Barry, In fact any deviation from factory specs can cause the same issues.

Impossible! Can’t (easily) buy leaded fuel or Asbestos clutch and brake linings, so car is no longer factory spec....

Thankfully I wasn't into music that much and only had small speakers therefore small holes to accommodate them, but if they need fixing to get through a roadworthy down the track then so be it.

Most cars owned by under 25 year old in the 80s would gave gad the treatment as you say. And yes the inspectors don't like it in SA either.

Not sure if that is correct i have taken many cars over for a roadworthy with speakers in the parcel shelf over in W.A, never once have i had an inspector disputed this

Funny how they see speaker holes as a potential safety issue (I'm  not saying boring holes in a structural item is not a concern), and yet everyone is happy to register a brand new 3 Safety Star vehicle like a Jeep  Gladiator or Ford Mustang , where words like "poor" and "marginal" are used in the reports.

What safety star rating would a Torana get. Hmm, probably best not to think about that.

Depends what you collide with. New cars are designed to crumple. I owned a 1975 Ford LTD years ago.You jack up the front or rear bumper bars to change wheels in these cars so they are uncrumpable. Have a head on with this and a new Hyundai and see you lives, however use this same scenario with two LTD's and things become interesting.

What starter motor numbers were on the pre-June 72 XU1's? I don't think mine has the above numbers?
